Atlus has announced the Metaphor: ReFantazio release date, alongside tons of new information about the JRPG’s gameplay, world, and story.
The game, which was announced in June last year, will land on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox Series X|S on October 11th, so if you’re eager to play the latest game from some of the finest minds behind the Persona games, you now know how long you’ll have to wait.
Metaphor: ReFantazio‘s release date was announced during a livestream, which followed up a new trailer with information about the game’s story setup and key gameplay systems.
First, we’re introduced to the game’s story, in which the player is swept up in a royal “election” after the king is assassinated. I’m pretty sure kings aren’t generally elected, but it’d sure be nice to live in a world where they were.
Atlus director Katsura Hashino, who’s hosting the stream, goes on to say that a video game should be more than just a delivery system for its story, which is why Metaphor: ReFantazio will feature “fully fleshed” gameplay systems.
We get to see some of the game’s art, which is being worked on by industry vets like NieR: Automata‘s Koda Kazuma and Neon Genesis Evangelion mecha designer Ikuto Yamashita.
The livestream also introduces the Gauntlet Runner, a mechanized vehicle that will let you travel across hostile wastelands. You’ll use it as both a means of transportation and a mobile base, so it’ll help you figure out where you’re going and what you’re doing.
Like Persona, Metaphor will revolve around a time system; activities will take a certain amount of time, for instance, and you’ll have to judge your journey and what you’re doing based on timing.
The game’s gorgeous UI gets a turn in the spotlight, too, and if you’re a Persona fan, then you’ll almost certainly appreciate how vivid and dynamic it looks.
