VITALS
The Washington Capitals selected Hyland from the WHL’s Brandon Wheat Kings in the 7th round (200th overall pick) of the 2023 NHL Draft. Hyland, who turned 21 in March, is listed at 5’11″ and 194 pounds. He remains unsigned by the Capitals.
CAREER SUMMARY
Hyland has played his entire junior hockey career with the Brandon Wheat Kings in the Western Hockey League (WHL)
In 2021-22, Hyland posted 13 goals and recorded 16 assists in 61 games for the Wheat Kings.
In 2022-23 Hyland posted 26 goals and 21 assists in just 42 games. The forward ranked first on Brandon in plus/minus rating (+11), tied for second in power play goals (11), third in goals and fourth in points. He had a Player Tryout Contract with the Hershey Bears when his season ended.
For the 2023-24 regular season, Hyland played in 66 games, scoring 32 goals and recording 27 assists for 59 points overall. He ranked first in goals, first in overall points, and first in power-play goals with nine. At the end of the regular season, Hyland was awarded the team’s Three Stars award for having the most points. During February, he was appointed as team captain.
2023-2024 MONTH-BY-MONTH RECAP AND TREND ANALYSIS
The following is a compilation of the month-by-month prospect reports for Brett Hyland during the 2023-2024 season. All monthly prospect reports can be accessed from our “Prospects” page in the top menu.
October
Hyland played in three games in September, scoring one goal and recording three assists.
October was a productive month for Hyland on the goal-scoring front, especially towards the end of the month. He had two consecutive games where he scored two goals, one on October 21 in a 4-3 shootout loss against the Wenachee Wild and the other in a 4-3 win against the Moose Jaw Warriors. Both of his goals against the Wild tied the score at the time while his second goal against Moose Jaw turned out to be the game-winner. Hyland was named the CHL Third Star of the Day on October 26.
In October, Hyland scored seven goals and recorded three assists for 10 points overall. For the season, Hyland has played in 14 games, scoring seven goals and recording three assists for 10 points overall.
November
November started quietly and ended quietly for Hyland but he had a hot scoring stretch in between. He scored a goal on November 9 against the Moose Jaw Warriors. He led the team in shots on goal that game with five. He then scored two goals on November 11 against Regina Pats in a wild 7-5 victory. His second goal was the game-winner. Hyland was voted as the third star of the game.
On November 17, he had a goal and assist in a 5-2 win against Edmonton Oil Kings. His assist was his 100th point with the Wheat Kings. On November 25, he had an assist on the team’s only goal in a 6-1 loss to the Medicine Hat Tigers.
Overall, during November, Hyland scored four goals and recorded one assist for 5 points in November. For the season, Hyland has played in 25 games, scoring 11 goals and recording five assists for 16 points overall. He ranks second on his team in goals and is tied for first in power-play goals with four.
December
December was a productive month for Brett Hyland. He began the month by scoring a hat-trick in a 7-1 victory against the Regina Pats and was voted first star of the game. He continued his scoring on December 5 with a goal and an assist against the Red Deer Rebels in a 5-2 win. He was elected the third star of that game.
His next game on December 8, a 5-4 shootout win against the Moose Jaw Warriors, also featured a goal and an assist. He closed the month with a goal and two assists in a 5-3 victory against the Regina Pats on December 30. The only game in December where he did not record a single point was their game on December 29 against the Saskatoon Blazers.
During December, Hyland scored eight goals and recorded six assists for 14 points overall. For the season, Hyland has played in 34 games, scoring 19 goals and recording 11 assists for 30 points overall. He ranks first on his team in goals, ranks third in overall points, and is second in power-play goals with four.
January
January did not start off well for Hyland as he took three minor penalties in the game on January 1 where they lost 4-0 to the Saskatoon Blades. He scored the team’s first goal during their 3-2 overtime win against the Victoria Royals on January 9 and was voted second star of the game. It was his 20th goal of the season.

Hyland scored the team’s first goal in a 7-3 loss to the Swift Current Broncos on January 12 and recorded an assist in the team’s first goal in a 6-4 win against Prince Albert on January 14.
During a 6-0 victory on January 20 against the Lethbridge Hurricanes, Hyland scored the first goal and the last goal and recorded an assist on a power play goal. He was voted the second star of the game. On January 21, he scored a goal in a 7-3 loss against Medicine Hat Tigers. It was his team’s second goal and, at the time, tied the game at 2-2.

On January 27, he scored a goal during a 5-3 loss to the Red Deer Rebels.
During January, Hyland played in 10 games, scored six goals, and recorded two assists for 8 points overall. For the season, Hyland has played in 44 games, scoring 25 goals, and recording 13 assists for 38 points overall. He ranks first on his team in goals, ranks third in overall points, and is second in power-play goals with four.
February
In a 4-1 win over the Red Deer Rebels on February 2, Hyland scored the team’s first two goals and contributed an assist. His second goal was the game-winner. He was elected the first star of the game.

Hyland scored another goal on February 3 in a 5-4 overtime win over the Swift Current Broncos. His goal, which was scored off the rush, put the team ahead 4-3 at 1:07 into the third period.
Hyland had an assist in a 2-0 win over the Edmonton Oil Kings on February 7 and three assists in a 4-1 win over Lethbridge on February 9. In the latter, he was elected the first star of the game.
Late in the first period, Hyland put his setup skills to work again, sending a picture-perfect pass across the zone to a streaking Roersma. The Lethbridge native cut to the backhand and lifted home his 18th of the campaign to put the Wheat Kings ahead by a pair going into the first intermission.

Wheat Kings Roar Out Of Starting Gate To Beat Hurricanes – Brandon Wheat Kings (chl.ca)
Hyland scored a power-play goal on February 10 at 6:35 of the first period which put Brandon up 2-1 against the Prince Albert Raiders. However, the Wheat Kings could not hold onto the lead and lost 7-3.
On February 16, Hyland scored a goal and had two assists in a 5-3 win over the Calgary Hitmen and was voted first star of the game.

On February 20, just two days after his 21st birthday, Hyland was named the Wheat Kings’ 41st Captain. Their previous Captain was Nate Danielson who had been traded away a month earlier.
“I felt pretty honoured,” Hyland said. “I was hoping to get this sometime in my career, especially in a place like Brandon where they play hard and the culture here fits my leadership style. I feel like I can uphold it. I felt honoured.” In a team release, while Hyland leads the team in goals, “his value on the ice comes from so much more than that, with his willingness to battle in all three zones, finish checks, and make opponents miserable in any way he can”.

On February 23, Hyland recorded an assist on an empty net goal at 18:23 during a 4-1 win against the Saskatoon Blades.
For February, Hyland played in 12 games, scored five goals, and recorded eight assists for 13 points overall. For the season, Hyland has played in 56 games, scoring 30 goals, and recording 23 assists for 53 points overall. He ranks first on his team in goals, second in overall points. and is first in power-play goals with eight.
March
Hyland had a great day on March 8 when the Wheat Kings beat the Lethbridge Hurricanes 4-0. Hyland had the secondary assist on the third Wheat Kings’ goal which came at 0:41 in the second period. He scored the team’s fourth goal at 0:58 in the third period. He had blasted a shot from the left circle for the goal. He was voted the first star of the game for his performance.
The next day, March 9, the Wheat Kings lost to Swift Current 6-3. Hyland assisted on the Wheat Kings’ first goal of the game at 1:48 into the second period. It tied the score at 1-1. Soon afterward, the Wheat Kings scored again for a 2-1 lead which they could not hold.
Wheat Kings won 3-2 over Prince Albert Raiders on March 16. Hyland assisted on the team’s first goal which came at 12:21 and tied the score at 1-1.
On March 21, Hyland scored his team’s fifth and last goal at 18:09 on a power play in the third period during a 5-3 win against the Moose Jaw Warriors. Hyland, poised at the left circle, blasted home the fourth Wheat Kings’ tally of the night. He was voted the third star of the game.

On March 22, the Brandon Wheat Kings. played the Regina Pats and won 3-2. Hyland had the secondary assist on the team’s second goal which came at 12:22 in the third period and tied the score at 2-2.

In the playoffs, the Wheat Kings were swept by the Moose Jaw Warriors. Hyland scored one goal and recorded four assists in the losing cause.
PLAYER FORECAST
Being 21 years of age, Hyland is now too old to return to juniors. He should be starting his professional season next year. Assuming he signs an entry level contract with the Capitals, he will likely contend for a job with the Hershey Bears. When his season was over, he had a Player Tryout Offer (PTO) with the Hershey Bears but was released from it. The report was that he needed to rest up.
