The United States women rolled to a 4-1 win over Germany in Olympic soccer on Sunday in Group B, assuring it will have a spot in the quarterfinals after two wins from two games.
The U.S. women’s attack was purring in the first half with Sophia Smith scoring twice and Mallory Swanson tapping home the rebound from a stellar strike from Smith, while Germany briefly levelled the score on a goal by Giulia Gwinn.
Starter Tierna Davidson came off shortly before half-time after picking up a lower leg injury, with Emily Sonnett replacing her.
Second-half substitute Lynn Williams put the game out of reach after coming on in the 85th minute, finishing from a Swanson assist on a counter-attack to wrap up all three points.
The win, combined with Thursday’s 3-0 victory over Zambia, means Emma Hayes and the Americans can do no worse than finish in one of the top third-place spots in their group.
The USWNT finish group play against Australia on Wednesday against Australia and can finish in first with a draw or a win as it looks to improve on a bronze-medal showing in 2021 in Tokyo.
