Why is it that sweets and cookies are so popular as the subject of puzzle games? Is it psychological? Are they just well-suited to the genre by being colourful and visually pleasing? Or is it chasing the success of sweet-themed games like Candy Crush Saga? Well, whatever the answer, today’s subject Just Delicious! continues that trend.
Similar to games like Woodoku, you turn and fit various cookie and sweet-themed blocks together on a grid, attempting to complete rows, columns and 3×3 squares in order to clear the board. At the very least it’s breaking out of the match3 genre that many puzzle games have tunnelled a niche into.
The one welcome trend that Just Delicious! doesn’t choose to break from is in terms of monetization. With the game boasting of being very ad-lite, and also offering a purchasable ad-free version. Of course, we’d need to get hands-on to actually see how well it functions, but trying to be a bit less intrusive can only be a good thing.
Sweet tooth
Personally, I think the whole sweet-theming when it comes to games is mostly based on the visuals. After all, it used to be that the early pre-mobile match3 and puzzle genre was dominated by games like Bejeweled, which also had a colourful theme. Just with gems rather than cookies.
