The Pittsburgh Penguins announced on Monday, just three days before NHL training camps open for the 2024-25 season, that the team has signed captain Sidney Crosby to a two-year contract extension that carries an $8.7 million cap hit that will start in the 2025-26 campaign.
The 37-year-old will account for that much against the NHL salary cap for at least 19 years and could have become an unrestricted free agent after this season.
If Crosby wanted to be the highest-paid player in the NHL throughout his career, he easily could have been. Instead, he’ll have made $8.7 million the whole way.

Crosby led Pittsburgh in goals (42; at least 14 more than any other Penguin), assists (52), and points (94; 27) in 82 games last season, his second straight with at least 52 assists and 93 points, respectively. He has 592 goals and 1596 points in 1,272 regular-season career games, all with Pittsburgh.
The two-time Conn Smythe Trophy winner as postseason MVP has 71 goals and 201 points in 180 career postseason games. Though, Pittsburgh has not qualified for the postseason in each of the past two years, missing by just three points last season, after making it for 16 straight.
Sidney Crosby, signed to a 2x$8.7M extension by PIT, is an elite playmaking centre who continues to dominate offensively. His generational work ethic has allowed his game to age extremely gracefully.
