Washington Capitals Announce Alex Ovechkin Out Week-To-Week With Lower-Leg Injury

The Washington Capitals announced on Tuesday afternoon that captain Alex Ovechkin is out week-to-week with a lower-leg injury suffered at the beginning of the third period during the team’s 6-2 win at the Utah Hockey Club on Monday night.

The 39-year-old left the game after getting struck in his right ankle by Utah center Jack McBain’s skate with 14:35 to go. Ovechkin tried to return, giving his leg a whirl during the first television timeout of the period, but appeared in great pain.

After scoring five goals in five periods in Washington’s 5-2 win at the Vegas Golden Knights on Sunday and game in Salt Lake City, Ovechkin leads the NHL with 15 this season and ranks 10th with 25 points in 18 games.

Washington, who leads the NHL with an average of 4.33 goals-per-game this season, hosts the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday (7 PM ET, Monumental Sports Network in-market, ESPN+ out-of-market).
