Washington Capitals Come Back Again, Down New York Islanders, 5-4 (OT); Tom Wilson Scores Two, Jakob Chychrun Gets Game-Winner

The Washington Capitals defeated the New York Islanders by a score of 5-4 in overtime at Capital One Arena on Friday to improve to 16-6-1 (.717 points percentage) this season. Goaltender Logan Thompson made 20 saves in the win.

First Period

  • 3:36, 1-0 New York: Holmstrom ripped one over the blocker of Thompson and to the top corner with a wrister from the right dot after Lee set him up from the right half-wall.
  • 4:50, 1-1: Dowd backhanded a shot over the left pad of Varlamov all alone in from to finish a triangular passing play with Miroshnichenko and Duhaime. Three of Duhaime’s four assists this season have been on goals scored by Dowd.
  • 12:10, 2-1 Washington (PPG): Wilson one-timed a feed by McMichael, who was on the right side of the goal-line, from the slot to finish a three-way passing play that also featured Strome along the right half-wall. Wilson has now scored power-play goals in back-to-back games and his four power-play goals this season are tied with Ovechkin for the team lead. Strome has now tallied at least one point in 19 of Washington’s 23 games this season, including 10 multi-point performances. Strome’s 25 assists are tied for third in the NHL, trailing only Colorado Avalanche center Nathan MacKinnon (28) and Vegas Golden Knights center Jack Eichel (26).

  • 1:15, 2-2: Lee tipped Dobson’s wrist shot from the side of the goal and the puck bounced under the glove of Thompson and in.
  • Carlson buried a rebound at the side of the goal at 14:05 but the goal was waved off due to goaltender interference. It was the third marker that Carlson scored but got called back this season.
  • 16:28, 3-2 New York: After Protas turned the puck over to Dobson at the blueline, Dobson chipped the puck ahead to Lee, who sent it to the left dot to Horvat and Horvat dished it cross-ice to MacLean. MacLean buried it under the pad of Thompson.
  • 18:09, 4-2: Holmstrom tipped in a wrist shot by Cholowski from the point in front of the blue paint and the shot went under the blocker of Thompson and in.

Chychrun extended his point and assist streak to three games (1-4-5). Chychrun has recorded nine points (four goals) in his last 10 games since returning from an upper-body injury on November 9. Strome, who leads the Capitals with 33 points (eight goals) in 23 games this season, has recorded his 11th multi-point game of the season (1-1-2).
  • 7:24, 4-4: Wilson one-timed a slapper under the blocker of Varlamov at the side of the goal to finish a triangular passing play with Van Riemsdyk and McMichael in the offensive zone. It marks McMichael’s second multi-assist performance of the season and the fourth of his career. McMichael recorded his first career three-point game. Wilson has scored three goals in his last two games and has recorded six points (three goals) in his last five games. Van Riemsdyk registered his 11th assist of the season. Van Riemsdyk ranks second among Capitals blueliners in assists and tied for third in points.
