The Wrapp – Airplane Plans, Nordic Survival, and Gravity-defying Catci

Hey there, welcome to our latest edition of The Wrapp.

This is a chance for you to see what the various members of the Pocket Gamer team are planning to play over this weekend and will, hopefully, give you an idea of some of the weird and wonderful things we get up to when we’re not keeping you up to speed with the latest news and tips. Heck, you might even find a new game to play.

It’s that time of year again: Pocket Gamer Connects San Francisco and GDC week. That means that I’ll be getting into a sealed plastic-metal combination vehicle and blasting across the Atlantic to the far side of the US. It’s the true test of ‘the commuter’s Swiss army knife’, the mobile phone, and so I’ve already drafted out my plans for entertainment during that extensive eleven-and-a-half-hour flight.

For a start, you’ve got to pad these things out with films you’ve missed. I’ve checked ahead and apparently, The Silent Hour, Rumours, Juror #2 and Conclave are going to be on the flights there and back, so that’s a slice of time eaten away.

Mobile games-wise, I’ve got the freshly released Songs of Conquest that I want to squeeze more (and more, and more) time into, and I’m hoping to finish up Final Fantasy 1 (+, through Apple Arcade) and finally get around to investing some time into Mutazione. Suzerain and Six Ages 2 beckon out to me too, but I’m unsure if I’ll get to them. Maybe on the way back.

Will be ooh-ing and aah-ing at all the new novels launching at a local book festival this weekend, then mourning her wallet’s doomed fate when she gets home at the end of the day.

Right, so this weekend I am going to HOPEFULLY do some of the Dynamax Raids in Pokemon Go for Raikou. Now, I say hopefully, because I will also be travelling to San Francisco for Pocket Gamer Connects and GDC, which means I have only a couple of attempts, and they are challenging battles.

I will probably download a few games for the flight, but haven’t thought that far ahead, and I always get terrible jet lag when I land in America. Hopefully, though, I will find something on the show floor that interests me.

I’m so behind on the Thomas K. Young library that it’s embarrassing. I need to finish the last entry in the Dadish saga, Dadish 3D, before moving on to a cool non-Dadish game called Be Brave Barb. So, I’m in for an adorable and colourful mobile gaming session about guiding little round heroes over platforms and such. Here’s hoping Thomas K. Young will someday want to talk to us.

I’ll also need to bust out my sealed-away iOS device to play a game of pure evil called Expelled, as Cat recommended. Also, I can’t forget to try Iwan’s recommendation, Songs of Conquest, at some point.

Hoo boy, Disco Elysium on mobile, now there’s a double-edged sword. On the one hand, I have to admit the idea of making a bespoke port that uses a visual novel style rather than attempting to adapt the much larger isometric scenes to a smaller screen is quite ingenious. But I think the talk about making it for a “TikTok audience” and the obvious hangover of all of Zaum’s shenanigans won’t be so easily brushed aside.

As it stands, I think for those who’ve been desperate to play Disco Elysium before this will be a very acceptable option; and it genuinely looks like a pretty good port. But like everything post-release it’s the messaging that’s been a bit botched.

After having no time to play games (due to moving places), I look forward to finally enjoying some gaming this weekend! I have a pretty big agenda too, from catching up on the latest event in Cookie Run: Kingdom, to delve deeper into the newly-released DC: Dark Legion. The latter surprised me quite a bit actually, since it’s so catchy! It reminds me of Fallout: Shelter, so if you love the genre, I strongly recommend this one.

Some other honourable mentions on my list include Tribe Nine (which I have been religiously playing every day for the past few days), and another one that caught my eye – Tiny Farm: Remastered!

My plan? Play some nice music in the background, chill on my favourite chair and just PLAY! This is my go-to means of enjoying a good, relaxing weekend.

Beyond dipping into Wuthering Waves for an hour or so, most of my weekend will be spent on Xbox Game Pass. I have played around with the PC and Samsung TV streaming and have been surprised at how well it works. My biggest surprise though is playing Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 on my phone in the Xbox app. It runs incredibly smoothly, so I am going to be stress-testing the Xbox App capabilities mostly. I am determined to break it, and I really don’t know why.

Finally this weekend, I have a lineup of games planned to dive into after a rough couple of weeks where I was dealing with moving to a new place. But anyway, I’ll be starting with The Sims 4, where I’m looking forward to learning as much as I can about the game overall and its mechanics.

Next, I’ll be jumping into Valhalla Survival, a game very similar to Survivor.io but with dark, stylized graphics. It’s fun and pretty straightforward.

Finally, I think I’ll start a new season in Football Manager 2024. I was waiting for the 2025 release, but that’s not happening now

Also, I really want to get as much sleep as possible because I’m just tired and feel like I need to hibernate like a bear.

This weekend is a no-brainer for me. I’ll be checking out Thomas K Young’s latest platformer Be Brave, Barb. Besides Dadish 3D, I’ve enjoyed all their previous efforts so I’m looking forward to getting to know this new spiny lass who’s wearing a rather fetching plant pot as a hat. The titular Dadish would likely break into my top 100 favourite video game characters if I were to make such a ridiculous list, so Barb has big shoes (Soil? Pots?) to fill.
