Monthly Report For Capitals Prospects In The CHL — February, 2025

The Canadian Junior Hockey Leagues (CHL) continued play through February even when the Four Nations tournament paused the NHL hockey season. Here is the monthly summary of how each of the Washington Capitals’ prospects playing in the CHL fared for the month.

The Capitals currently have six prospects playing in CHL: the Western Hockey League (WHL), the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), and the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJML). The prospects in those leagues are defenseman Cam Allen, left-wing Andrew Cristall, left-wing Eriks Mateiko, right-wing Terik Parascak, right-wing Ilya Protas and center Patrick Thomas. The one Capitals prospect playing in the USHL in the United States, Miroslav Satan, will also be included in this summary.

CAM ALLEN (D) – 19 – DRAFTED 2023 (Fifth Round, #136 Overall)
Teams: London Knights – League: Ontario Hockey League (OHL)

On February 8, Cam Allen was involved in a single vehicle collision and the London police ultimately charged him with multiple offenses related to impaired driving. He was scheduled to appear in court on March 6 and was not allowed to skate with the team or play in any games until then. The OHL has suspended him indefinitely. [Update: suspension set at 15 games, including team games occurring since his arrest.]

Before that incident, Allen appeared in three games in February and did not score any goals or record any assists. He served 12 penalty minutes because of 6 minor penalties.

His season totals through February, including his time with both the Guelph Storm and his current team, the London Knights, were 45 games played, 11 goals, and 31 assists. Through January 31, he has made 136 shots on goal and had 57 penalty minutes. He is +16 in Plus/Minus.

The London Knights clinched a berth in the OHL playoffs on February 4 after a 5-3 win in their game that day. This was their 24th consecutive season of them qualifying for the playoffs.

On February 27, Allen was sentenced to two years of probation, including an order to complete 100 hours of community service. He is prohibited from driving for two years and part of his probation order includes counselling for alcohol issues. He was also fined $5,200 and has a year to pay it. He would be eligible to be reinstated on March 16, provided he conforms to the terms of his probation.

As of February 28, the London Knights had a 46-8-2-0 record and were in first place in the Midwest Division of the Western Conference in the OHL.

ANDREW CRISTALL (LW) – 19 – DRAFTED 2023 (Second Round, 40th Overall)
Team: Spokane Chiefs – League: Western Hockey League (WHL)

Cristall started off February with an amazing game. In a 10-3 win against the Everett Silvertips on February 1, Cristall scored one goal and recorded five assists. He recorded secondary assists on the Chiefs’ first two goals and had the primary assist on the Chiefs’ fourth goal, the game-winner at 13:07 in the first period.

His goal came when he dangled towards the net and swept the puck across the slot before his scoring shot at 16:05 during the first period, which put Spokane up 5-2.

He went on to record two more assists. His performance not only earned him First Star of the Game but was selected as the WHL Top Performer for that night.

Cristall remained hot in a 5-2 win over the Vancouver Giants on February 2 as he scored two goals and recorded two assists. His first goal was at 4:46 of the second period, putting the Chiefs up 1-0.

He then assisted on a goal at 9:36 of the second period, putting the Chiefs up 2-0.

Cristall added an empty net goal and assisted on another one near the end of the third period. Once again, he was named the First Star of the game. He also was named Tempo WHL Player of the Week.

He continued his goal scoring streak and recorded two assists in a 9-1 win over the Seattle Thunderbirds on February 7. One of his assists was on a goal scored at 11:18 during the first period, which put the Chiefs ahead 2-1 and was ultimately the game-winning goal.

His goal came at 8:01 of the third period, making the score 8-1.

His goal-scoring streak was stopped on February 8, but he still recorded three assists in a 5-4 overtime loss to the Victoria Royals when the Chiefs overcame a deficit to force overtime. He had one assist in each period, with his third assist coming on a power play goal at 0:39 which decreased their deficit to 4-3.

On February 14, in a 5-4 shootout loss to the Tri-City Americans, Cristall scored two goals and recorded two assists. He scored his first goal at 5:14 of a second period power play which tied the game at 1-1.

Cristall scored his second goal at 5:28 of the third period, which tied the game at 2-2.

He had the primary assist on each of the Chiefs’ last two goals late in the third period, including the game-tying goal at 19:11 which sent the game into Overtime.

On February 15, in a 6-3 win over Tri City Americans, he assisted on two late goals for the Chiefs. These assists allowed Cristall to be the first player in the WHL to get to 100 points for the season.

On February 17, Cristall scored two goals in a 4-2 win over the Kamloops Blazers, a win that allowed the Chiefs to clinch a playoff spot in the WHL Playoffs. His first goal occurred at 15:30 in the second period, which broke a 2-2 tie and was the game winner. His second goal was an empty netter near the end of the game.

On February 21, in a 9-6 win over the Tri-City Americans, Cristall had one goal and four assists and was selected as Second Star of the Game. He assisted on a goal scored at 0:59 in the first period, which put Spokane up 1-0.

He scored his goal at 12:08 in the first period, which put the Chiefs up 3-0.

He added three more assists before the game was over.

Cristall had another two-goal game on February 23 in a 7-3 win over Portland Winterhawks , which earned him the Second Star of the game. His first goal was at 16:53 on a first period power play which put the Chiefs up 3-0.

His second goal came on a third period power play at 12:41, putting the team up 6-3.

On February 28, in a 5-1 win against the Wenatchee Wild, he had two assists.

In February, Cristall played in 13 games for the Spokane Chiefs. He scored 11 goals and recorded 24 assists, averaging more than two points per game. He had four two-goal games and 10 multi-point games.

Cristall played 49 games for the season through February 28, scoring 42 goals and recording 72 assists for 114 points. He is also +47. He ended February in first place in the WHL in points, tied for second place in goals, and second in assists to Gavin McKenna (but caught up to McKenna in assists on March 1).

As of February 28, the Chiefs have a record of 41-17-1-1 and are in second place in the U.S. Division of the Western Conference.

ERIKS MATEIKO (LW) – 19 – DRAFTED 2024 (Third Round, 90th Overall)
Team: St John Sea Dogs/Rimouski Oceanic – League: QMJHL

Overall, it was a quiet month for Eriks Mateiko on the scoring front. However, he started the month well, with a goal and two assists in a 8-2 win over the Quebec City Remparts on February 2. Mateiko was selected as Third Star of the game.

In a 4-3 shootout win over the Chicoutimi Saguenéens on February 15, he had the game winner in the shootout portion. Despite having no goals nor assists during either regulation or overtime, his shootout winner earned him the Third Star of the Game.

In a 5-1 win over the Baie Comeau Drakkar on February 23, Mateiko had the secondary assist on Oceanic’s fourth goal which came at 4:39 during the third period.

Mateiko had the primary assist on the game-winning goal during a 5-2 win on February 28 against Baie Comeau. This goal came at 15:18 in the second period, putting Oceanic ahead 3-1.

Mateiko played in ten games for the Rimouski Oceanic during February, scoring three goals and recording 4 assists. For the season through February 28, Mateiko played in 41 games, 23 with the St. John Seadogs and 18 with Rimouski after the trade. He scored 22 goals, recorded 12 assists for 44 points overall, and was +10.

TERIK PARASCAK (LW) – 18 – DRAFTED 2024 (First Round, 17th Overall)

Parascak was off to a relatively slow start in goal scoring in February but scored more goals towards the end of the month. He continued to pile up assists.

In a 3-2 win over the Kelowna Rockets on February 7, Parascak scored a goal and recorded one assist, earning him the Third Star of the Game. His goal was at 6:17 of the second period, putting the Cougars ahead 2-1.

He assisted on a second period goal at 11:13, which put the team ahead 3-1 and was the game winner.

The next day, February 8, he assisted on each of the team’s first two goals in a 3-2 win over the Kamloops Blazers. His first assist was on a goal scored just under a minute into the game, putting the Cougars up 1-0. The second assist was on a goal scored at 9:30 of the first period and broke a 1-1 tie.

On February 15 in a 5-1 win against the Everett Silvertips, Parascak assisted on a goal at 15:32 in the second period, which put the Cougars ahead, 4-0.

In a 7-2 loss to Vancouver Giants on February 17, Parascak scored the Cougars’ second goal at 8:29 of the third period on a power play which decreased the team’s deficit to 4-2.

On February 21, Parascak scored one goal and recorded two assists in a 5-3 loss to the Victoria Royals. He scored his goal at 8:33 during the first period to put the Cougars up 1-0.

On February 25, in a 5-2 win over Kelowna Rockets, Parascak scored the Cougars’ first goal at 1:05 of the first period, putting the Cougars up 1-0. After that win, the Cougars were just one point from clinching a playoff spot, which they clinched in their game the next day against the same team.

On February 28, in a 4-2 victory over the Kamloops Blazers, Parascak scored a goal and recorded two assists. He scored his goal at 9:31 of the first period to put the Cougars up 1-0. He also assisted with two second-period goals.

Parascak played in 12 games in February, scoring five goals and recording 9 assists for 14 points. He had four pointless games for the month and four multi-point games.

Through February 28, he played in 55 games this season, scoring 26 goals and recording 50 assists, and 76 points overall. He is +10. He ranks first for the Cougars in assists, is tied for first overall points, and is fifth in goals scored.

ILYA PROTAS (LW) – 18 – DRAFTED 2024 (Third Round, 90th Overall)

Protas started February by scoring two goals in a 4-3 come from behind win against the London Knights on February 2. He scored his first goal at 19:32 of the second period, which narrowed their deficit to 3-2. He then scored the game-tying goal at 0:53 of the third period. His performance earned him the First Star of the Game.

On February 8, Protas scored the game-winning goal in a 3-2 overtime win over Brantford Bulldogs when he picked up a rebound and shot for the score. His game winner had allowed him to redeem himself after a double minor he had taken earlier had led to the opposing goal that had tied the score earlier. He was selected as the First Star of the game.

On February 13,in a 8-2 win against the Sarnia Sting, Protas scored the Spitfires’ first goal at 5:08 after a turnover which put the Spitfires ahead 1-0. He also contributed three assists in the game.

On February 14, Protas had the secondary assist on Windsor’s first goal at 15:27 into the third period, which decreased their deficit to 2-1 in a game they eventually lost 3-2 in overtime to the Saginaw Spirit. The point gained in the loss allowed the Spitfires to clinch a playoff berth for the 2025 OHL playoffs.

On February 17, in a 4-1 win over Owen Sound Attack, Protas had the secondary assist on the game-winner at 8:11 into the second period, which put Windsor up 2-0. He also had an empty-net goal on the Spitfires’ fourth goal of the game, which put them up 4-1.

Protas scored two goals and recorded two assists in a 6-5 Overtime loss to the Sarnia Sting on February 21. Protas scored his first goal at 11:59 during the second period, which tied the game at 2-2.

He scored his second goal at 16:29 of the second period on a power play which put the Spitfires ahead 3-2.

He also recorded assists on two third period goals as the team took a 5-2 lead which they could not hold.

On February 22, he assisted on two goals during a 5-4 loss to Flint Firebirds.

February 23 was a much better day for the Spitfires as they beat the Saginaw Spirit 7-3. In that game, Protas scored two goals and recorded three assists, allowing him to set the goal scoring record for Windsor for an import player. He was selected as First Star of the Game.

His first goal was at 6:58 on a first period power play which tied the game at 1-1.

His second goal was at 19:03 during the first period, which put the Spits ahead 3-2.

With two multi-goal games that week, on February 25, Protas was named the Cogeco OHL Player of the Week.

On February 27, during a 7-1 over Peterborough Petes, Protas scored at 2:25 in the first period, putting Spitfires ahead 2-1 and was the game winner. He also assisted on two goals.

Protas played in 12 games in February, scoring 10 goals and recording 16 assists for 27 points total. He had three two-goal games and seven multi-point games.

For the season through February 28, Protas played in 54 games, scoring 42 goals and recording 59 assists for 101 points overall.

In team statistics, Protas has been battling with Liam Greentree for the lead in goals, assists, and total points.

The Spitfires ended February in first place in the West Division of the Western Conference of the Ontario Hockey League and clinched a playoff berth.

PATRICK THOMAS (C) – 20 – DRAFTED 2023 (Fourth Round, #104 O

While Thomas has generally been more of a playmaker than a goal-scorer throughout his junior hockey career, February was an exaggeration of that tendency. He scored just two goals during the month but had several multiple assist games.

On February 2, Thomas had two assists in a 9-3 win against the Sudbury Wolves. He had the secondary assist on a power play goal at 3:28 of the first period, putting the Bulldogs ahead 2-0.

He also had the primary assist on a goal at 8:48 in the second period, putting Brandford ahead 6-2.

On February 7, in a 4-2 win against Saginaw Spirit, Thomas recorded two assists, including the game-winning goal scored during a third period power play at 5:36, which put Brantford ahead 3-2.

He also assisted on the empty net goal at 17:52 in the third period, which put Brantford ahead 4-2.

Thomas had two secondary assists on February 8 in a 3-2 Overtime loss to the Windsor Spitfires.

In a 10-1 win over the Niagara Ice Dogs on February 14, Thomas recorded four assists, including the primary assist on a goal scored at 8:16 of the first period, which put the team up to 2-0 and held up as the game winner.

His second assist was on a goal scored at 12:14 during a first period power play and put the Bulldogs up 3-0. He had two more assists that game.

Thomas recorded three assists during a 5-4 win over Niagara Ice Dogs on February 16 and was selected as Third Star of the Game.

His first assist was on a goal scored at 4:41 in the first period, which gave the Bulldogs an initial 1-0 lead.

His second assist was on a goal scored at 12:30 during the second period, which tied the game at 2-2.

His third assist was on a goal scored at 17:20 during the second period, which put Brantford up 4-2.

February 17, an 8-6 win over Sault St. Marie Greyhounds, was another three assist game for Thomas, with the win allowing Brantford to clinch a berth in the Ontario Hockey League playoffs for 2025. One assist was a secondary assist on a first period power play goal while the other assists came on third period goals.

Thomas finally scored his first goal of the month during a 4-2 loss to Kingston Frontenacs on February 21. This goal came on the power play at 0:32 into the second period on a tip in.

On February 23, during a 5-1 win over Ottawa 67’s, he had both a goal and an assist. He scored his goal during a second period power play at 10:13 as he knocked in a rebound. This put the Bulldogs up 3-0. He also assisted on the Bulldogs’ fourth goal which came at 11:59 during the third period.

He closed the month out with another three assist game, a 5-1 win over the Oshawa Generals on February 28. He assisted on the team’s first two goals and their last goal which was an empty net goal. This win vaulted the Bulldogs into first place in the Eastern Conference.

Thomas played in 11 games in February, scoring 2 goals and recording 22 assists for 24 points overall. While goals were scarce for him, he still had nine multi-point games.

His totals for the season through February 28 are 24 goals and 71 assists for 95 points in 59 games. He ranks second on the Bulldogs for goals, first in assists, and second in overall points. As of February 28, he was in first place in the OHL for assists and fifth place in points.

At the end of February, Brantford had a 37-17-5-0 record and was in first place out of five teams in the East Division of the Eastern Conference. They have battled it out with the Kingston Frontenacs and the Oshawa Generals for the division lead for most of January and February.

MIROSLAV SATAN (C) – 18 – DRAFTED 2024 (Sixth Round, 212th Overall)
Team: Sioux Falls Stampede/Omaha Lancers   League: United States Hockey League (USHL)

Satan played in 10 games for the Omaha Lancers during February and did not score any goals nor record any assists.

Through February, he has played 33 games this season, scoring two goals and recording 1 assist, with all points recorded for the Sioux Falls Stampede before he was traded. He has had 27 shots on goal for the season.  He has typically been the center on the fourth line.
