The Washington Capitals downed the Detroit Red Wings, 4-1, Tuesday night at Capital One Arena in Washington. The victory improves the Capitals’ record to 45-15-8 (98 points) on the season.
LINEUP
Logan Thompson (29-4-5, 2.32 GAA, .916 sv%) got the start between the pipes for the Capitals. Petr Mrazek (12-20-2, 2.01 GAA, .920 sv%) got the start in goal for the visiting Red Wings. The starting forward lines and defensive pairs for the Capitals:

Carlson’s 41 assists rank tied for seventh among NHL defensemen. In addition, Carlson has recorded at least one assist in 14 of his last 19 games. Sandin has recorded 25 points (3g, 22a) in 43 career games during the month of March, which is the most points he has recorded in a calendar month.
The Red Wings knotted things up at the 12:28 mark of the period. Dylan Larkin (28) notched the tying tally. B. Chiarot (8) had the assist.

2ND PERIOD
The middle frame went scoreless, with the Capitals leading in five-on-five shot attempts, 24-22, and expected goals for, 1.14 to 1.04.
3RD PERIOD
The Capitals regained the lead midway through the final frame. Pierre-Luc Dubois (18) tallied the go ahead goal at 8:16. Aliaksei Protas (31), Jakob Chychrun (25) had the helpers.

Dubois (18g-42a–60p in 68 GP) has reached the 60-point mark for the fourth time in his career.
Protas (29g-31a–60p in 68 GP) has reached the 60-point mark for the first time in his career. Protas had 53 points (13g, 40a) in 169 career games prior to this season. Fifty-five of Protas’ 60 points have come at even strength.
Chychrun, who has established a single-season career high in points (43), is two assists shy of matching his career high (2023-24: 27a).

Wilson (821 GP) is the fourth player in NHL history to play 750-plus games prior to recording their first 30-goal season, joining Mike Sillinger (829 GP), Johnny Bucyk (755 GP) and Alex Delvecchio (951 GP).
The Capitals put the game away a few minutes later on Connor McMichael’s 24th goal of the season. Alex Ovechkin (22) and Dylan Strome (45) had the assists.
