Indiana’s 2025-26 roster will be built this spring by new coach Darian DeVries, who will navigate the transfer portal to assemble his first team in Bloomington.
Inside the Hall will examine some of the prospects linked to the Hoosiers this spring. Today: Drexel guard Jason Drake.
Numbers to know
33 games at Drexel last season: 11.1 points, three rebounds and 3.1 assists in 26.2 minutes per game. Shot 42.8 percent from the field, 39.6 percent on 3s and 86.5 percent from the free throw line.
Background and potential fit
Indiana is working the transfer portal for more guards and Drexel transfer Jason Drake is a name to know. Drake is visiting Indiana today, and according to The Portal Report, he’s received interest from schools such as St. John’s, Pitt, St. Joes, Temple and UCF, among others.
Drake’s journey through college basketball has been far from linear.
The Oak Park, Michigan, native had a handful of Division I offers as a 3-star prospect in the 2022 class and he ultimately settled on the Horizon League’s Cleveland State. Drake struggled to break into the rotation as a freshman, averaging 1.6 points in a little over five minutes per game.
After one season, the 6-foot-2 guard departed the program, dropping to the junior college level at Butler Community College in El Dorado, Kansas. Despite fighting through a back injury, Drake shot 46.5 percent from the field and 42.1 percent from deep, averaging 9.6 points, 3.4 rebounds and 3.7 assists.
Again, Drake was on the move. He committed to Drexel to play his junior season on June 18 last summer. Under head coach Zach Spiker, Drake posted his most productive campaign yet.
Although the Dragons only finished 9-9 in the Colonial Athletic Conference, Drake finished third on the team in scoring and second in 3-point percentage. He scored at least 20 points on four occasions, with 25-point efforts coming against William & Mary on Feb. 6 and Elon on March 8, respectively.
Drake was versatile offensively, showcasing an ability to spot up and knock down threes while also creating his own shot in the midrange or at the rim. His shiftiness allowed him to beat defenders off the dribble, where he could find an open teammate or drive to the hoop.
He thrived in the pick and roll, and although he’s slightly undersized, he seems to fit the mold of what Darian DeVries is looking for in his guards. Tayton Conerway, the Sun Belt player of the year last season and the Hoosiers’ most recent commitment, has a similar build as Drake, standing at 6-foot-3 and 186 pounds.
Conor Enright — 6-foot-2 and 180 pounds — is another slightly smaller, compact and physical guard DeVries nabbed from the portal. In addition to Jasai Miles and Lamar Wilkerson, Indiana has added a healthy dose of and playmaking and defending to its backcourt.
Drake could be viewed as a valuable option off the bench who can provide immediate bursts of scoring. His perimeter shooting and ability to finish through contact could also make the adjustment to the Big Ten slightly easier.
Indiana has secured six commitments from the transfer portal and is still building its team for next season. Drake could be an intriguing addition as the Hoosiers solidify guard depth.
