Garcia’s Verdict: Haney’s “Beating” Leaves Him Ripe For Ramirez Upset On DAZN PPV This Friday

Mikey Garcia is giving Jose Ramirez the edge in his fight with former two-division world champion Devin Haney in their 144-lb catchweight fight this Friday, May 2nd, live on DAZN PPV for $59.99.

Garcia feels that Haney’s year out of the ring and the way he was beaten in his last fight against Ryan Garcia will leave him vulnerable prey for the experienced 2012 Olympian Ramirez.

Miikey notes that Ramirez and Haney both are coming off defeats, but the way they lost was much different. He points out that the former WBC and WBO light welterweight champion Ramirez was outboxed by Arnold Barboza, whereas with Haney, he was beaten up by Ryan. He was hurt multiple times in that fight. Mikey says it’s rare that fighters can come back from being as hurt as Haney was. The chin becomes permanently weak from that moment on.

“Everyone sleeps on Ramirez. They don’t see what we see. He’s been training super hard. He’s very motivated,” said Mikey Garcia to Fight Hub TV about this Friday’s fight between Devin Haney and Jose Ramirez on DAZN PPV. “Haney is coming off a loss to [Ryan] Garcia. Who knows how he comes back after that loss?

People doubt Ramirez, 32, because of the way he was outboxed in his last fight against Arnold Barboza Jr. last November. He was outjabbed and even out-slugged in that fight, losing a 10-round unanimous decision. It was fairly close because Ramirez landed some big, eye-catching shots.

Clinch Control

What gives Ramirez a chance against Haney is the timing of the fight. He’s catching Haney with him coming off a long layoff and a bad beating from Ryan Garcia. We don’t know if he can take a good shot from Ramirez without nosediving like he repeatedly did against Kingry.

As we saw in that fight and in Haney’s clash against Jorge Linares, once he’s hurt, he stays that way. He doesn’t recover and goes into survival mode by clinching nonstop and running.

If Jose and his trainer, Robert Garcia, have been thinking ahead, they’ll have planned for the holding that Haney will do when he’s hurt. Fighting through the clinch is a must for Ramirez if he wants to finish Haney off once he’s got him on shaky legs. Ryan failed to continue battering Haney while being held. If he had, he’d have knocked him out for sure.

“That’s why we feel Ramirez is in a very good position to take this fight and win and come back to the top. Ramirez’s experience, strength, and he’s a heavy-hitter also,” said Mikey. “And again, considering Haney’s last fight, he got hurt multiple times in the fight by Ryan. It’s been a little over a year.

“That inactivity and just how he lost. Not everybody can come back from a loss like that and be 100%. Ramirez lost in December [to Arnold Barboza Jr.], but he didn’t get beat up. He got outboxed, but he didn’t get beat up, whereas Haney did. he got hurt. I think all that helps Ramirez perform better,” said Mikey.
