The Mystics announced Wednesday that Amoore and the team will evaluate treatment and rehabilitation options. Amoore, 24, was expected to make her preseason debut Saturday against Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever.

The Mystics selected Amoore with the sixth overall pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft on April 14. She was one of three first-round picks by a rebuilding Washington team, joining Sonia Citron (No. 3) and Kiki Iriafen (No. 4).

In 157 career NCAA games at Virginia Tech and Kentucky, Amoore averaged 15.7 points and 5.5 assists. She earned two All-America selections and was named SEC Newcomer of the Year in her lone season at Kentucky. Amoore transferred after following head coach Kenny Brooks from Virginia Tech and helped lead the Wildcats to a 23-8 record and an NCAA Tournament berth.

Road to Recovery Begins

The Mystics have not specified the severity of the ACL injury, only that it involves the right knee. Recovery from a torn ACL generally spans eight to 12 months for professional athletes. A less severe injury could result in a shortened timeline.

Despite the setback, Amoore’s determination should guide her through the recovery process. She’s often talked about the importance of being challenged mentally in a basketbell context.

“Iron sharpens iron,” Amoore said. “When you get thrown into that situation you either adapt or drown. I’m excited to go and be challenged mentally and grow my game.”

Standing at 5-foot-6, Amoore acknowledged her size has often prompted questions, but emphasized the importance of basketball intelligence.

“Just my brain,” Amoore said after being drafted. ” I think, you know, it’s no secret. I’m on the shorter side. So, having to use my brain and my abilities in different ways ― I’ve had to study the game like I studied for a test in college.”

Even off the court, Amoore projects the confidence and toughness Washington saw when making her a top draft selection.

“As long as people have called me too short, I’ve been looking to counteract that,” Amoore said. “But I think with my competitive background, I have a little bit of dog in me that’s gonna keep fighting.”

Georgia Amoore’s Injury and Its Impact on the Washington Mystics

Amoore was drafted to bring shooting and stability to the Mystics’ backcourt. She was in competition to earn the starting point guard role in a position battle with Jade Melbourne and Sug Sutton.

Moore’s cerebral approach and fearless style made her an immediate asset on a roster looking to accelerate a rebuild. General manager Jamila Wideman cited Amoore’s preparedness, communication skills and humility as standout traits during training camp.

“Georgia has a lot of great assets,” Wideman said during media day. “I would name her brain, as well, but I would name it as just one of them. What we’ve seen her show up and do is to be incredibly prepared to participate and really listen intently. She is really, really communicative with her teammates, and she’s also come in with a sense of humility.

“I think she’s come in and wanted to listen to our vets, learn from their experience, try to get a sense of the other players that are on the floor with her and find her spots to be present and vocal,” Wideman explained.

Amoore had begun building chemistry with Melbourne, a fellow Australian guard. The two shared a long history on the court growing up, and Melbourne called it a “full-circle moment” to be reunited professionally.

“Georgia was always the leader when we played together,” Melbourne said Monday. “And she’s actually older than me and now she’s calling me a vet, so it’s just strange. It feels wrong calling her a rookie. It’s awesome to just have, like, a really good friend. I think we can bounce off each other. … Just the fact that we’re both here is crazy. It’s a full-circle moment.”

While the team hasn’t confirmed the severity of Amoore’s injury, any extended absence will affect a Mystics squad that counted on her to play significant minutes. Her ability to space the floor and orchestrate offense was key to the team’s vision.
