The Rangers and defense “prospect” Matthew Robertson have agreed on a two year contract extension. Robertson, the Rangers 2nd round pick in 2019, was highly regarded when drafted but simply hasn’t been able to crack the NHL lineup after 4 full seasons in the AHL. The 24 year old may be a late bloomer, which is the hope at this point, but his 2 games in the NHL thus far don’t necessarily bode well for him. He’s been improving, so maybe he’s a dark horse to make the roster out of camp as a 7D.
Robertson is most likely headed to the AHL, even though he is no longer waivers exempt. Contract dollars aren’t known at the moment–the Rangers are still one of those teams that don’t put contract information in their announcements–but he’s going to come in at a less than $1 million cap hit. I wouldn’t be shocked if he has a one-way deal, meaning he earns the same in the AHL as he would in the NHL, but that doesn’t really impact anything else.
Hopefully Matthew Robertson is a late bloomer. He’s a smooth skater with size and was drafted as a solid low event, two way defenseman. We shall see.
