Less than two full days after he tied the all-time mark in Goals Scored with a pair of goals at Capital One Arena, Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin scored his 895th career goal to take sole possession of the NHL record during the second period of the Caps’ Sunday matinee against the New York Islanders at UBS Arena.

The goal, which came at roughly 1:47 PM EST on the Capitals’ first power play opportunity of the contest, marked Ovechkin’s 42nd goal of the 2024-25 season and was assisted by Tom Wilson and Dylan Strome.

The goal came at 07:26 of the second and also made Islanders netminder Ilya Sorokin the 183rd different netminder on which Ovechkin has scored in his career, also an NHL best.

The game was paused for an in-game ceremony, in which NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, Gretzky, and Ovechkin, spoke to the crowd assembled at UBS Arena. The Islanders lined up to shake the hand of and congratulate Ovechkin, who thanked the Capitals organization, his teammates past and present, and his family, including his wife Nastya, sons Sergei and Ilya, mother Tatyana, and his late father Mikhail.

Video tributes were shown, featuring NHL opponents, former and current teammates, members of the organization, family members, and other greats from other North American sports leagues, including Derek Jeter, LeBron James, and Michael Jordan.
