Anthony Joshua believes he’ll finish off Tyson Fury if he drops him if or when the two finally meet up. AJ still needs to get past the massive roadblock, Francis Ngannou, this Friday in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia before he can entertain the idea of facing WBC heavyweight champion Fury collect untold riches.
Joshua (27-3, 24 KOs) feels he’s on a different level than the 35-year-old Fury (34-0-1, 24 KOs), who is looking like he’s aged badly since the high point of his career, beating the unproven, non-world-class fighter, Deontay Wilder in 2021.
Few would argue against Joshua finishing off what’s left of the shell of Fury at this stage of his career, as he’s looking like he’s lost a lot from his age due to the ravages of time coupled with his eating habits and years of lackluster, low-level opposition.
Joshua’s Bold Claims
AJ’s comments were direct and fiery:
- “If I put Fury on his arse, I wouldn’t let him get up…” to DAZN.
- “Me and Fury are completely different beasts. Genetically, strength, mindset.”
- “I was boxing Fury up in the amateurs when he used to come down Finchley.”
Fury must win his fight against IBF, WBA & WBO heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk on May 18th in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and that will be a tall order for him. However, if it goes to the cards, you can’t rule out another controversial decision favoring Fury, just like his last match against Ngannou.
Some fans believe that Fury-Joshua is too big of a fight commercially for Fury to lose on points. Hence, it might take a knockout for Usyk on May 18th for him to win because if it goes to the cards, we could see another questionable decision for Fury.
The Challenge
Joshua says, “Give me an opportunity to fight Fury, and I’ll show you what I’m about.” Getting the opportunity to may prove difficult for Joshua, because he still needs to defeat the mountain of a man, Ngannou on Friday, and this guy is all wrong for him.
As Joe Joyce said of Joshua: He’s a “glass cannon,” meaning he has power, but his punch resistance isn’t there, and he could fall under the powerful fists of Ngannou.
That doesn’t mean that the Joshua-Fury fight still can’t happen, but a lot of the air would be sucked out of the clash if one or both guys are coming off losses when it happens.
