Berlanga: ‘F Plant,’ Wants Munguia Or Charlo Next

Big Fight Hopes

In Edgar’s post-fight interview tonight at the Caribe Royale, he laid out his big plans, saying he wants Jaime Munguia, Jermall Charlo and a rematch with Canelo Alvarez. The first two options are possible, but not the third against Canelo.

You can relate to Berlanga wanting to get a rematch with Canelo because he got a giant $10 million payday, which changed his life. None of the other fights out there for him will pay similar money, and his chances of beating the top contenders at 168 or 175 are slim. Berlanga is like Cinderella, who was invited to the ball. Instead of seeing the reality of what it was, Edgar thinks it can happen again. It can’t and it won’t.

While he looked great tonight, but that was because he was fighting a 35-year-old fighter that just recently returned from a 10-year layoff. Even when Gonzalez-Ortiz was active 12 years ago, he was a marginal fighter. Watch his fight against Serhiy Dzinziruk from 2012. He looked terrible, and that was when he was active. Berlanga looked good tonight because he was facing a poor opponent, who didn’t belong in the same ring with him or anyone ranked in the top 15.

Alvarez will NOT give Berlanga a rematch in this lifetime because their fight was a near shutout last September. It was a complete mismatch with Edgar just fighting to survive.

Canelo is near retirement, and he won’t waste time going over old ground, fighting Berlanga again just because he wants “The bag.”  Alvarez will fight the guys that Turki Alalshikh wants him to so that he can make big money.

Berlanga says he won’t move up to 175 despite his colossal size and wants to fight Jaime Munguia or Jermall Charlo. When asked if he wanted to fight former IBF super middleweight champion Plant, Berlanga said, “F*** Plant.” He then said his targets were Munguia or Jermall.

Jermall’s Status

Charlo, 34, has fought only once in the last four years since 2021, against former welterweight contender Jose Benavidez Jr. in 2023. A fight between Berlanga and Jermall might not sell on PPV.

It wouldn’t be the type of contest that a promoter would want to stick his neck out and pay the kind of money Berlanga would likely expect to get. He might be disappointed if he thinks that’s a $10 million fight or even $5 million. Charlo is the forgotten man. His popularity from 2018 to 2021 is gone due to four years of inactivity.

‘F* Plant’

“Yeah, they love me from the Canelo fight,” said Edgar Berlanga iFL TV tonight when asked if it’ll be easy for him to sign with PBC to get the Jermall Charlo or Caleb Plant fight now that he’s a free agent. “The whole staff at PBC, they love me. I sold the s*** out of that fight [Canelo Alvarez], and I brought that charisma.

“I brought a great fight for the fans, and now I’m a veteran. I’m up there with the best. I got to go out there and perform now. F*** Caleb Plant. We want [Jaime] Munguia. We want Jermall Charlo,” said Berlanga when asked if he has a message to Caleb Plant. “Plant, you’re a b****.

“I got him out of there early and now I’m onto the next one,” said Berlanga about his win over Jonathan Gonzalez-Ortiz tonight.
