BU women’s hockey names Carey captain for 2025-26; Healey, Kelly, Yuhn named assistants – The Boston Hockey Blog

Senior defender Maeve Carey will captain the 2025-26 Boston University women’s hockey team, the program announced on Monday.

Sydney Healey, Maeve Kelly, and Clara Yuhn were named assistant captains, joining Carey in an all-senior leadership group.

Carey, who transferred to BU from Stonehill ahead of the 2024-25 season, is the first transfer to be named as a Terrier captain since Reagan Rust in 2018-19, according to BU Hockey Stats. She played her freshman season at Stonehill under Watchorn, finishing with 15 points (five goals, 10 assists) in 37 appearances.

“Maeve was a unanimous selection by both her teammates and our coaching staff, and that speaks volumes,” head coach Tara Watchorn said in a press release. “She’s earned this honor through her consistency, her maturity, and the way she shows up every single day.”

Carey, a Gloucester, Mass. native, notched six points (one goal, five assists) and blocked 22 shots in 32 games last season. She suffered an injury against New Hampshire on Feb. 15 that ended her season. Carey accumulated a 2.7 College Hockey Individual Point (CHIP) value last season, third among Terrier defenders and first among returning defenders.

Healey is BU’s leading returning scorer, having tallied 23 points on 15 goals and eight assists last season. She scored the game-winning overtime goal in the Hockey East championship game and was named tournament MVP for her contributions. Healey was named to the Hockey East third team and earned Player of the Week honors twice (Oct. 31 and Mar. 10).

She has 27 goals and 22 assists so far in her BU career.

“Sydney has grown tremendously both on and off the ice, and her evolution as a leader has been tremendous to watch,” Watchorn said. “Her attention to detail, her organization, and her steady presence makes her a key pillar of our leadership group.”

Kelly appeared in all 38 contests last season, registering 11 points from two goals and nine assists. Her 29 blocked shots were fourth-most on the team (first among returners) and she was named the Hockey East Defender of the Week on Mar. 3.

“Maeve is driven to win, and that intensity fuels the group around her,” said Watchorn.

Yuhn totaled 18 points with 11 goals last season, both second-most among returners behind Healey. She had a two-point game in the Hockey East semifinal against Boston College and scored a game-tying third period goal in the Hockey East championship game. Yuhn was named the Hockey East Player of the Week on Feb. 29.

“Clara leads by example on the ice, but what sets her apart is how she carries that leadership into the classroom, around campus, and in every interaction with her teammates,” Watchorn said. “She’s proud to wear the arched Boston, and it shows.”
