The Washington Capitals fell to the Colorado Avalanche, 2-1, Thursday night at Capital One Arena in Washington. The loss drops the Capitals record to 13-5-1 (27 points) for the season.
The Capitals opened the scoring late in the first frame on Pierre-Luc Dubois’ first even-strength goal of the season and held the 1-o lead into the first intermission. The Avalanche tied the game late in the middle frame on a shot by Mikko Rantanen (13) that deflected off of Capitals defenseman Matt Roy skate boot for a 1-1 score at the second intermission. The Avalanche took their first lead of the night early in the final frame on a tally from Miles Wood, and that would be the the game-winner.
LINEUP
Logan Thompson (8-0-1, 2.63 GAA, .913 sv%) got the start between the pipes for the Capitals. Alexandar Georgiev (4-5-0, 3.56 GAA, .863 sv%) got the start in goal for the visiting Avalanche. The starting forward lines and defensive pairs for the Capitals:

2ND PERIOD
The Avalanche tied the game late in the middle frame on a shot by Mikko Rantanen (13) that deflected off of Capitals defenseman Matt Roy’s skate at 14:19. J. Drouin (2) had the lone helper.

And that was all she wrote in the middle frame. Colorado out attempted Washington 26-10 in the second period.
3RD PERIOD
The Avalanche took their first lead of the night early in the final frame on a tally from Miles Wood (2) at 3:29 of the third period. C. Makar (20) and P. Kelly (3) had the assists.

And that was it, as the Avalanche held on for the 2-1 victory. Colorado led in five-on-five shot attempts, 49-40, expected goals for, 2.27 to 1.74 and high-danger chances, 12-10.
SHAVINGS
- Pierre-Luc Dubois scored his second goal of the season to give the Capitals a 1-0 lead. Dubois has recorded six points (1g, 5a) in his last six games.
- Tom Wilson recorded his eighth assist of the season on Washington’s game-opening goal. Wilson has tallied three assists in his last four games against Colorado dating back to last season.
- Trevor van Riemsdyk was credited with the secondary assist on Dubois’ goal, his 10th assist in 19 games this season. Last season, van Riemsdyk did not record his 10th assist until his 56th game.
