Capitals Fall to Hurricanes 4-2, Alex Ovechkin, Brandon Duhaime Score

The Washington Capitals fell to the Carolina Hurricanes, 4-2, Sunday evening at the Lenovo Center in Raleigh. The loss moves the Capitals record to 8-3-0 on the season.

SUMMARY

The Capitals took an early lead into the first intermission but the Hurricanes would respond for the following two periods. Former Caps defenseman Dmitry Orlov scored twice against his former ‘mates, while Alex Ovechkin scored his 860th career goal to move within 34 of tying Wayne Gretzky’s all-time record. Charlie Lindgren would make 40 saves in the decision.



LINEUP

Charlie Lindgren (3-2-0, 2.62 GAA, .883 sv%) got the start between the pipes for the visiting Capitals. Pyotr Kochetkov (4-1-0, 2.61 GAA, .891 sv%) got the start in goal for the Hurricanes. The starting forward lines and defensive pairs for the Capitals:

1ST PERIOD

With 5:59 left in the opening frame, former Capitals defenseman Dmitry Orlov ripped home his second goal of the season to give the Hurricanes a late 1-0 lead in the game; Martin Necas recorded the assist on the play.

With two Hurricanes in the penalty box, Alex Ovechkin knotted the Caps even with Carolina with 16 seconds remaining on the 5-0n-3; The Great Eight’s 860th career goal was assisted by John Carlson and Dylan Strome.

Brandon Duhaime gave the visitors the lead with just over ten seconds left in the opening frame, nudging one past Kochetkov for his second of the season; Nic Dowd was credited with the helper.

The two teams ended the first period with the Capitals holding the edge on the scoreboard, Carolina leading Washington in shots, 13-11, and the Caps converting on one of their three power play opportunities.

2ND PERIOD

Two and a half minutes into the second, Martin Necas picked up his second point of the night, this time lighting the lamp against Charlie Lindgren with his sixth of the season. Eric Robinson and Jasperi Kotkaniemi recorded the assists.

Dmitry Orlov would add his second of the evening just over three minutes later, powering a shot past Lindgren to give the home team a 3-2 lead; Necas and Jalen Chatfield assisted on the goal.

The ‘Canes would enter the second intermission with the 3-2 lead and a lopsided 31-16 lead in shots (18-6 for the frame).

3RD PERIOD

The Hurricanes would stimy the Caps’ efforts to draw even in the final 20 minutes, and added an empty-net tally from Andrei Svechniko to secure their sixth straight victory.

The two teams finished with a combined 67 shots on net, with the ‘Canes outshooting Washington by a 44-23 margin. The Caps managed to kill off all three power play opportunities granted to the Hurricanes, while convering on just one of their four man-advantages.
