A badly emaciated Chris Eubank Jr. came in overweight at 160.05 at today’s weigh-in for his fight against Conor Benn this Saturday night on DAZN PPV. The smaller fighter, Benn, came in at 150.4 lbs.
We always knew it would be tough for the former super middleweight Eubank Jr., but today showed that he made a mistake agreeing to the 160-lb limit, along with a medieval 10-lb dehydration clause, which allowed a limit of 170 lbs.
Eubank Jr. Slightly Over
Chris Eubank Jr. will need to pay a fine of $500K, and this goes along with the $100K penalty for egging Benn during the kick-off press conference. That’s $600,000 smackers, and he could be fined additionally if he weighs in over 170 lbs on Saturday as part of the 10-lb rehydration clause. That penalty is $1 million.
Eubank Jr. is reportedly getting a purse of $10 million for the fight. So, even if he does lose $1.6 million, he’d still be making out like a bank robber with the cash left over.
Benn’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, was in a joyous mood, talking about Eubank Jr. missing weight, treating it like it like it’s a victory for Conor. With the way he’s talking, he’s got some idea in his head that Chris Jr. will be sufficiently drained for Benn (23-0, 14 KOs) to win.
“Amazing. Half an ounce, and so close. Unfortunately, still over. No problem with the fight, of course, but obviously, there are consequences to missing weight, which is already contracted,” said promoter Eddie Hearn to Ring Magazine about Chris Eubank Jr. missing weight.
“All good. Junior missed weight, but Conor made it at 156.4, feeling unbelievable, feeling fresh, feeling hydrated, and ready to go. I think he would have made weight if he had switched a few things up.”
It doesn’t matter that Benn had no issues making weight and will be at full strength on Saturday at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London. He’ll still be way out of his league going up against Eubank Jr.
“He missed weight, and we move forward to the next weigh-in tomorrow [with a 10-lb rehydration limit]. He’ll be 162 in the ring. That’s it,” said Hearn about Benn. “Eubank will be 176.
Conor will be giving away a stone in the ring, which is a massive disadvantage. This little period is probably an advantage for Conor because he feels amazing.”
