De’Aaron Fox Hopes For Long-Term Extension With Spurs – Basketball Insiders

De’Aaron Fox is hopeful of signing a long-term extension with the San Antonio Spurs this summer.

The star point guard was acquired by San Antonio at this year’s trade deadline and figures to be part of the core around Victor Wembanyama. He will become eligible for a four-year, $229M extension in August.

“I would definitely hope so,” Fox told the Houston Chronicle when asked about a possible extension.

Fox only played 17 games for the Spurs after departing the Sacramento Kings. He was shut down in March due to a wrist injury and underwent season-ending surgery. The procedure addressed pre-existing tendon damage in his left pinkie finger.

He expects to be ready for the start of the 2025-26 season.

The 27 year old played 514 games for the Kings after being selected fifth overall in the 2017 NBA Draft. During that time, he averaged 21.5 points, 6.1 assists and 3.9 assists. He averaged at least 25 points in each of his last three seasons with the team.

What Will Spurs Backcourt Look Like Next Season?

There has been speculation that Chris Paul is looking to move on to another team. San Antonio owns the No. 2 and No. 14 overall selections in the 2025 NBA Draft. Guard Dylan Harper is widely expected to be selected with the second pick.

What remains to be seen is whether the Spurs make that pick for themselves or another team.

Rumors are floating that San Antonio will be in the mix for Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo. The Spurs have also been linked to Kevin Durant as an alternative.

The present reality isn’t too shabby at all. A team with Fox, Rookie of The Year Stephon Castle, Harper, Devin Vassell and Victor Wembanyama certainly figures to pose big problems for opponents.

It all certainly makes for some fun debate in the Spurs front office and we’ll soon find out which way they lean.
