Merrimack received a commitment from Michigan Tech defenseman Matthew Campbell out of the transfer portal on Wednesday.
Campbell will enter his senior season next year, but he could have an additional year of eligibility after he sat out his first season at Quinnipiac.
This season he was second on the Huskies in time on ice (20:17) and he was the Huskies’ second-highest-rated defenseman in CHIP (24.9), only behind Chase Pietila (27.4), who signed with the Pittsburgh Penguins at the end of the season.
Campbell’s time on ice increased as the season progressed. He played almost 30 minutes in the CCHA playoffs at Bowling Green on March 7 and he didn’t play fewer than 22 minutes over the last two months of the season.
Campbell finished the season with 12 points (6g-6a) in 34 games.
According to InStat data, Campbell rates highly as an offensive defenseman. His playdriving numbers are almost all in the high-80s or 90s. He’s physical (ranked in the 83rd percentile in hits last season).
Campbell attended the Philadelphia Flyers development camp last summer.
