EIHL Wednesday: Need to win those ‘games in hand’

[ad_1]

Wednesday night hockey is very much ‘Games in hand night’ in Week 27 of the 2024/25 Elite Ice Hockey League season.

Nottingham Panthers could end the night second if they can get past Glasgow Clan at the Motorpoint Arena. It’s a huge week coming up for the panthers, with the visit of second-placed Sheffield Steelers on Saturday before heading to fourth-placed Cardiff Devils on Sunday. The Panthers could emerge as league title contenders if they come out of those games with three wins. Beating Glasgow Clan is no easy feat at the moment, however. Clan are the league’s best team over the last 10 games with nine wins, and beat two of the top four last weekend. They are also eyeing moving into sixth with their games in hand.

Manchester Storm are five points shy of a playoff place but with two games in hand on Dundee Stars, who they face on Wednesday night – and then again in Dundee on Sunday. To be blunt, Storm cannot afford to lose both games – and ideally would want four points to cut that gap down to one. A split series would leave Manchester still with a lot of work to do to make up the difference. Dundee have been struggling for form of late with only three points out of the last 10 on offer, and need some bodies back in their line-up.

Fife Flyers host Cardiff Devils for only their second midweek home game of the season. This game was originally scheduled to take place at the end of January, but storm damage to the roof of the Fife Ice Arena saw it postponed. The Flyers ran Nottingham Panthers close on Sunday night before running out of stream in the final ten minutes, a better performance after their thrashing in Cardiff the night before. The Devils, meanwhile, need to pick up points in their games in hand to avoid falling down to fifth.
