Fans Want Plant, Berlanga Wants…Money?

Edgar Berlanga says he’s ready to fight one of his three-fighter hitlist after destroying little known Jonathan Gonzalez-Ortiz in one round last Saturday night in Orlando, Florida.

The Hit List

– Jaime Munguia
– Jermall Charlo
– Caleb Plant

Overpriced?

Fans overwhelmingly want Berlanga to fight Caleb Plant next, but Edgar is likely to overprice himself, believing he rates the same kind of money he got fighting Canelo Alvarez. That’s not a huge fight that will bring in a lot of PPV buys because Plant isn’t popular enough. If Berlanga prices himself out by demanding $10 million, he must work down the list towards one of the lesser fighters.

Berlanga (23-1, 18 KOs) made it clear that he’ll be the A-side against whoever he chooses because he has “the island of Puerto Rico” behind him. His #1 choice is Jaime Munguia, who is coming off a brutal fifth round knockout loss to Bruno Surace last December, and has lost two out of his last three fights. That’s not ideal.

Cruiserweight Berlanga?

It’s questionable if Edgar can even make 168 anymore, as he looked like a cruiserweight last Saturday night. He missed weight last Friday, weighing in at 169 1/2 lbs, and there are a lot of doubts if he can even get back down to 168 without putting himself in the hospital.

Berlanga should be fighting at light heavyweight at the very least at this stage of his career if not cruiserweight. He’s about to turn 28, and has obviously been eating well with the $12 million that he got from his three-fight contract with Matchroom.

Berlanga’s hit list doesn’t necessarily represent who the best super middleweight contenders are because the division has changed with new blood rising. The guys on his wish list are either old or fighters with shaky resumes.

Jermall turns 35 in May, and has fought only once since 2021. He’s not even relevant in the 168-lb division.

“We got Plant, we got [Jermall] Charlo and we got Munguia. We got them three,” said Edgar Berlanga to Fighthype when asked who he wants to fight next after stopping Jonathan Gonzalez-Banks in the first round last Saturday night in his comeback fight in Orlando.

“We got to see which one bites the hand. Whoever bites the hand is going to get the bullet,” said Berlanga, making it clear that he represents the A-side against those three that he’s considering.

That’s my man. If he comes through with something in the next fight, we make it happen,” said Berlanga about promoter Eddie Hearn. “I’m a big name in the sport right now. I got an island behind me. I got Puerto Rico with me. I got the whole world with me.

“It’s not about the promoter. It’s about getting the right fights, having the right team, and I got that. I feel like I’ve got the best team in boxing right now, the strongest team. People were saying bad comments about me being in the co-main event,” said Berlanga.

New 168 Kings

  1. Osleys Iglesias
  2. Diego Pacheco
  3. Christian Mbilli

The former IBF super middleweight champion Plant’s record lacks great wins. His best victories are against 39-year-old Anthony Dirrell, fringe contender Trevor McCumby, and Jose Uzcategui.
