Early this month, it was announced that LSU guard Flau’jae Johnson would forgo the 2025 WNBA Draft. Johnson, who has spent the first three years of her collegiate career at LSU, is eligible for another year in the NCAA. On Saturday, Johnson posted a cryptic message about her future.

“I’m beyond proud of the bond we’ve built. Go be great, and know I’ll always be cheering you on! To Louisiana State University, I’m forever indebted for the opportunity to pursue my dreams. Stay tuned for a major announcement soon… 4 junior year out!”

Perhaps Johnson was simply expressing gratitude for the University and her teammates. Giving special shoutouts to Last-Tear Poa, Sa’Myah Smith,Shy Day-Wilson, and Anessah Morrow, Johnson made sure to express extra gratitude to her teammates. Three of those players are either entering the NCAAW transfer portal or declared for the WNBA Draft.

Johnson has never shied away from the fact she wants to win. A key piece of the LSU Tiger’s National Championship run, the Georgia native was a proven winner her freshman year. Since, Johnson, Mulkey, and the Tigers have fallen short of their championship goals for two consecutive goals. Defeated by Iowa in the Elite Eight last season, LSU suffered a heartbreaking 72-65 loss against UCLA in this year’s Elite Eight.

Since the loss, Johnson expressed her desires and plans in a recent YouTube video.

With the current NIL, Johnson made it known she “doesn’t want to go out on an L.” With championship aspirations, she also understands the implications of the upcoming WNBA CBA (Collective Bargaining Agreement). We know one thing, the WNBA isn’t in the cards for Johnson just yet. She’s such a proven winner, Johnson couldn’t bare to watch the NCAAW Championship game.

I talked to coach Mulkey,” Flau’jae Johnson mentioned on Best of Both Worlds with Flau’jae.  “We had a real conversation and I told her some real stuff about how I’ve been feeling and I think that conversation  really helped us and see what we both see and how I can make this year my best year. It’s crazy out here. This portal is crazy. These commitments are insane. There’s a lot going on, I’m not going to lie.”

A native of Georgia, LSU head coach Kim Mulkey credits Johnson for “kick starting” the program. A player and then assistant coach for Louisiana Tech, Mulkey spent 21 years as the head coach of Baylor Women’s Basketball. A Three-time Champion with the University, Mulkey made her way back to coach the LSU Tigers in 2021.

Having missed the NCAA Women’s Tournament for three consecutive seasons, Mulkey was the de facto leader that transformed the program. Part of LSU’s success was founded by Flau’jae Johnson in addition to Mulkey.

Flau’jae Johnson was the first McDonald’s All-American player Mulkey recruited in her first season as LSU’s head coach. From there, Mulkey credited the portal system for recruitment players such Angel Reese. Mulkey had nothing but praise for Johnson.

Flau’Jea Johnson Has Winning Ambitions

“Flau’jae was a high school All-American and we got her”, said Kim Mulkey in a press conference. I’m forever indebted to Flau’Jae Johnson.

Despite falling short a championship this year, Johnson is a well decorated athlete. Throughout her illustrious collegiate career, she was named Third-team All-American in 2025. Regarded as one of the top scorers in the country, Johnson averaged a career-high 18.9 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 1.7 steals. Undoubtedly known for her versatile and athletic scoring ability, Johnson shot a career-high 38.3 percent from beyond the arc, and 46.8 percent from the field.

With stats of that caliber, Johnson earned herself a spot on the First-Team All-SEC this season, after being named Second-Team All-SEC in 2023.

According to On3’s Talia Goodman, 1,355 athletes have entered the NCAA women’s transfer portal. With the amount of decisions made in the last few weeks, It wouldn’t be surprising if Johnson entered to portal. While no decision or announcement has been formally made, Flau’jae Johnson has massive championship goals in mind.

Returning to college for a fourth year will give Johnson to opportunity to work on her game, while pursuing a National Championship. If she declares for the 2026 WNBA Draft, she will likely join a loaded class that could include Lauren Betts, Ta’Niya latson, Olivia Miles, and Azzi Fudd just to name a few.

Above all, Flau’jae Johnson is a talented rap artist in addition to a championship caliber basketball player.  Earning her own commercial during March Madness, the Georgia native has continued to pay homage to her late father through her musical talents. An NIL Icon, Johnson has deals with Unrivaled, Mondelez, and Jay-Z’s Roc Nation.

A woman of many talents, the future is bright for Flau’jae Johnson, no matter what route she choses to go.
