Hurricanes Down Capitals, 3-1, Take Series, 4-1

The Washington Capitals fell to the Carolina Hurricanes, 3-1, Thursday night at Capital One Arena in the District. With the win, the Hurricanes take the best-of-seven series, four games to one.


LINEUP

Logan Thompson (5-4-0, 2.46 GAA, .918 sv%) got the start between the pipes for the Capitals in Game 5. Frederik Andersen (6-2-0, 1.41 GAA, .935 sv%) got the start in goal for the visiting Hurricanes. The starting forward lines and defensive pairs for the Capitals:

1ST PERIOD

The Hurricanes opened the scoring at 10:10 of the opening frame. Jordan Staal notched opening tally, assisted by J. Martinook (5).

The Capitals tied it up a little over four minutes later on a tally by Anthony Beauvillier (2) at 13:41. The goal was unassisted.

Following a shot by Jakob Chychrun that hit the post, Carolina looked to have the go-ahead tally but Logan Thompson made a great save with the edge of his stick.

The period concluded with the game tied, 1-1. The Hurricanes led in five-on-five shot attempts, 19-18. The Capitals led in high-danger chances, 5-4 and expected goals for, 0.89 to 0.70.


2ND PERIOD

The Capitals looked to score a goal-ahead goal early in the middle frame on a tally by Matt Roy, but the goal was overturned when it was ruled Connor McMichael was off-sides on the entry.

The period concluded without a tally, keeping the score, 1-1. The Hurricanes led in five-on-five shot attempts, 17-15, scoring chances, 7-6, high-danger chances, 4-1 and expected goals for, 0.71 to 0.40.


3RD PERIOD

The Hurricanes scored the go-ahead goal in the waning moments of the final frame. Andrew Svechnikov (8) at 18:01. S. Walker (2) and S. Jarvis (6) had the helpers.

The Canes added an empty net tally for the 3-1 win. Seth Jarvis added the Canes third marker.
