Hurricanes Score Six Unanswered Goals To Top Capitals, 6-2; Nic Dowd And Dylan Strome Score For Washington

The Washington Capitals played their second game of a five-game homestand against the Carolina Hurricanes. The Capitals came into Friday’s contest dropping five out of their last six contests while the Hurricanes won four straight coming into Friday. 

The Capitals got out to a 2-0 lead, but Carolina stormed back with six unanswered goals, and Washington dropped its sixth straight game in seven contests.

PERIOD 1

After the Hurricanes got themselves a two-on-one, Nic Dowd gave the Capitals a 1-0 lead at 7:06 of the first period. Nicolas Aube-Kubel and Beck Malenstyn had the helpers.

The Capitals honored long-time Capital Dmitry Orlov at the first TV timeout with a video tribute. It was his first time back in D.C. since being traded to the Boston Bruins at last year’s trade deadline.

Washington got its second power play of the game and Dylan Strome extended the Capitals lead to 2-0, 15 seconds into the man-advantage. Alex Ovechkin and John Carlson had the assists at 16:29. It was also Carlson’s 500th career assist.

The Hurricanes outshot the Caps 10-6 in the first period. 

 

PERIOD 2

 

Carolina’s forecheck went to work quickly in the second period. Brent Burns got the Hurricanes on the board on a backdoor one timer to make it 2-1. Andrei Svechnikov and Sebastian Aho got the assists at 5:17.

The Hurricanes outshot the Caps 9-4 in the middle frame. 

 

PERIOD 3

 

Carolina tied the game thanks to Seth Jarvis. The puck snuck behind Darcy Kuemper, 3:23 into the third. Vasily Ponomarev and Orlov had the assists.

Beck Malesntyn took a slashing penalty midway through the third period and Svechnikov made the Caps pay, giving the Hurricanes a 3-2 lead at 12:41. Aho and Burns had the assists. 

 

Evgeny Kuznetsov took a slashing penalty after the play and the Hurricanes once again capitalized. Burns got his second goal of the game with a long-range blast from the point making it a 4-2 game at 13:59.

Orlov scored on the empty net from board to board to make it 5-2 Canes at 18:11.

 

Ponomarev made it 6-2 on an odd-man rush at 19:01.
