After several weeks of social media teases, IU Athletics today confirmed the return of the Bison mascot in a video posted to its social media accounts.
The mascot will be named “Hoosier the Bison,” according to the video released Tuesday morning.
While the video did not provide an up-close look at the costume for “Hoosier the Bison,” it did share that the mascot will make its return in the fall of 2025.
IU Athletics previously had a bison mascot from 1965 through 1969.
In explaining the return of the bison, IU’s video released on social media shared the following: “For centuries BISON walked through what is now known as Bloomington along the Buffalo Trace. AS a result, BISON imagery has been found over the last 200 years on the campus of Indiana University. It is the distinguishing feature of the state seal. In 1965, the BISON became the official mascot of Indiana University. In 1969, it disappeared. On December 16, 2024, a small but committed group of students discussed bringing back THE BISON. This is their story …”
