Indiana’s 2025-26 roster will be built this spring by new coach Darian DeVries, who will navigate the transfer portal to assemble his first team in Bloomington.

Inside the Hall will examine some of the prospects linked to the Hoosiers this spring. Up next: Sam Houston guard Lamar Wilkerson.

Numbers to know

95 career games at Sam Houston: 13.9 points, 3.6 assists and 2.7 rebounds in 27.3 minutes per game. Wilkerson is a career 44.8 percent shooter, with marks of 40 percent from long range and 82.6 percent from the free-throw line.

Background and potential fit

Wilkerson has taken a long road through college basketball, but has steadily blossomed into a scoring machine.

The Ashdown, Arkansas native was not ranked out of high school in the 2020 class. He pursued the JUCO route and started his career at Three Rivers College in Poplar Bluff, Missouri.

In his first JUCO season, he played just eight games but averaged 23.6 points, 4.1 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 2.9 steals per game in 30.6 minutes per contest.

In his second year at Three Rivers College, Wilkerson averaged 16.7 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 1.6 steals in 34.6 minutes per game. He shot 43.1 percent from the floor, 40.9 percent from deep and 78.6 percent from the line in 27 games. He was an honorable mention All-American.

Wilkerson committed to Sam Houston State in April 2022. In his first season with the Bearkats, he came off the bench and averaged 16.9 minutes in 30 games. Wilkerson produced 7.6 points, 2.9 rebounds and 0.5 assists per game on 42.4 percent shooting and 37.4 percent on 3-pointers.

Wilkerson took considerable strides in his second season at Sam Houston. Starting all 31 games, he averaged 13.8 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 29.8 minutes per game on 42.8 percent shooting with a 34.7 percent from deep.

In the 2023-24 campaign, Wilkerson was the team’s leading scorer and led the Bearkats to a 21-12 record and a 13-3 mark to win the Conference USA regular season. He was named first-team All-Conference USA.

His production also increased significantly this past winter. Every average marked a new career high – 20.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.1 steals on 47.7 percent shooting and 44.5 percent from deep in 34.9 minutes per game.

Starting all 32 games, Wilkerson was tabbed a first-team All-Conference USA for the second straight season, but the Bearkats limped to a 13-19 record and didn’t play in the postseason.

Facing Indiana on Dec. 3 in Assembly Hall, Wilkerson posted 18 points, three rebounds and three assists in 32 minutes. He shot 8-for-18 from the floor, including 2-for-4 from deep. The Hoosiers won 97-71.

He scored 30-plus once this past season but dropped 29 points on four occasions.

The 6-foot-5 shooting guard has a silky-smooth jumper with plenty of range. He topped 50 percent in effective field goal percentage all three years at Sam Houston, including a remarkable 59.1 percent this past season.

Wilkerson entered the transfer portal on March 24. Despite five years of collegiate athletics, the NCAA’s December ruling applied a blanket waiver for former JUCO players to grant an extra year of eligibility, which will provide Wilkerson the opportunity to play another year.

Per Jonathan Givony, Wilkerson has received interest from programs including Kentucky, Alabama, Duke, Kansas, Arkansas, Louisville and others as of March 28.

Wilkerson is one of the top shooters in the portal – making him a highly coveted target for Indiana. The Hoosiers are among several schools vying for Wilkerson’s commitment and are believed to be a top contender to land his commitment. He ranks as the No. 57 portal prospect at On3.
