It looks like the recently-announced Mafia: The Old Country won’t feature a full Italian voiceover dub, despite the fact that it’s set in Sicily and the fact that previous games in the series have offered Italian audio.
On the Steam page for The Old Country, we can see that the game will offer a full dub in English, French, Spanish, and German, as well as Russian. Italian players, however, will have to content themselves with interface translations and subtitles.
A quick look at the Steam pages for the first three games in the series (or the Definitive Edition remake of the first game, at the very least) shows that they all feature a full Italian dub, making The Old Country the first game in the franchise not to offer this convenience.
It’s worth noting that we don’t know a whole lot about The Old Country yet. It’s possible that the lack of an Italian dub is due to translation complications; if characters speak both Italian and English in the game, for instance, a dub might be somewhat difficult to implement.
However, it’s also ironic that the first game in the series that appears to take place entirely in Italy will lack an Italian dub. One would imagine the mafiosi depicted in the game would probably take umbrage with such a decision, amusing as it might be.
If you’re not familiar with Mafia: The Old Country, it’s the latest entry in the Mafia series. Announced during yesterday’s Gamescom Opening Night Live showcase, the game is a prequel set during the 1900s, and it’ll shine a light on the “brutal underworld” of the Sicily of that era.
Developer Hangar 13 and publisher 2K have promised more information to come regarding Mafia: The Old Country this December, so stay tuned for more on that.
In the meantime, if you want to keep abreast of the game’s progress, you can wishlist it right now on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Watch this space for more as and when we get it.
