In an episode of ‘Club Shay Shay,’ Portnoy was asked whether Mahomes could ever pass Brady as the greatest of all time. “No. And it’s an easy answer. We have the benefit of them meeting head-to-head,” Portnoy said.
“Super Bowl in Tampa Bay: Brady won. AFC Championship at Kansas City: Brady won. So, they played and Brady’s at the end of his career, and still beat him.”
Brady and Mahomes couldn’t be separated over their six matchups, with the quarterbacks settling for three wins and three losses. However, Brady’s successes came with a lot more on the line, and Mahomes only beat the NFL legend during the regular season, never in the playoffs.

Mahomes lost the AFC Championship game against Brady and the New England Patriots in 2019, as the Chiefs were handed a 37-31 defeat. Two years later, they met in Super Bowl LV when Brady joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Mahomes was handed a humiliating 31-9 defeat.
Brady’s record is certainly going to be pursued by Mahomes, and it’s expected that he will at least be the second-greatest quarterback in history. Mahomes did miss the opportunity to create history when the Chiefs failed to complete the three-peat, something that no team has accomplished in the Super Bowl era.
“It hurts. It’s gonna hurt for a while,” Mahomes told reporters after the game. “But how can you respond from it? How can you get better? How can you not just be satisfied with getting here? That starts with me.
“Any time you lose the Super Bowl, it’s just the worst feeling in the world. It’ll stick with you for the rest of your career. These will be the losses that motivate me to be better.
Mahomes has immense respect for Brady, as most quarterbacks do, and the NFL legend believes that they can both be celebrated without being compared. “There’s nothing that Patrick can do, in my opinion, that takes away from what I tried to accomplish in my career and there’s nothing that I did [that] can take away from what he’s trying to accomplish,” Brady said on ‘The Pat McAfee Show’ in January 2024.
“I feel like I tried to be the best I could be and, even though I had sporting idols, like I said, I could never be Steve Young. I could never be Joe Montana. I could never be Dan Marino or John Elway. Those were my childhood idols and they had incredible careers and they put as much as they could into their career and I really respect that. And I just try to do the same thing.
“And believe me, if anybody can go out there and win seven Super Bowls, I have so much respect for them. I understand how difficult it is. I will congratulate them and I’m going to give whoever it is a big hug.”
