Mavericks Win NBA Draft Lottery, Jazz, Wizards Fall

The Dallas Mavericks own the top pick in the 2025 NBA Draft after a lottery leap.

Barring a shocking trade, the Dallas Mavericks have captured the Flagg.

A 10-spot lead at the 2025 NBA Draft Lottery gave the top pick at the upcoming annual event to the Dallas Mavericks, who will choose first for the second time in franchise history. Many expect that the Mavericks will use the selection on Duke star freshman Cooper Flagg, who was in attendance to learn his potential professional fate.

It was a Texas two-step atop the draft board, as the San Antonio Spurs likewise leaped, moving six spots into second. The Philadelphia 76ers and Charlotte Hornets rounded out the top four.

Dallas, fresh off one of the most bizarre seasons in franchise history, has won its first lottery and holds the top pick for the second time in franchise history after previously taking DePaul standout junior Mark Aguirre with 1981’s opening choice. The Mavericks entered the night with a 1.8 percent chance to land the top selection.

Less than a year after appearing in the NBA Finals, the Mavericks (39-43) placed 10th in the Western Conference before dropping a 120-106 decision to the Sacramento Kings in the Play-In round. Management, led by general manager Nico Harrison, infamously traded away franchise face Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for oft-injured NBA All-Star Anthony Davis.

The 2025 NBA Draft will be held June 25-26 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y.
