Merrimack will play Mount St. Mary’s in MAAC semifinals

Mount St. Mary’s defeated Marist 62-58 on Thursday night and advanced to face Merrimack in the MAAC semifinals on Friday night at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.

Merrimack is 1-6 all-time against Mount, in a series that dates back to 2020 when both teams were in the NEC. The Warriors won the first meeting, 64-61, and have lost six straight games in the series.

Mount defeated Merrimack 66-58 on Jan. 31. The Warriors led by as many as 21 points in the second half of that game before Mount stormed back for the win.

Merrimack coach Joe Gallo turned out to be prophetic after that game, when he said: “Four or five weeks from now, we’re in one-and-done situations. If we come out like that and lay an egg, we’re done. So we’ll learn from this.”

Mount point guard Dallas Hobbs — their No. 1 offensive player according to KenPom — left Thursday’s quarterfinal against Marist with an apparent ankle injury.
