“Klay’s not going anywhere,” one NBA executive predicted while chatting with HoopsHype. “The Warriors can’t let him walk. He’s a four-time champion, and they can’t really replace him. At some point, if a player isn’t getting the job done and still wants to play as he gets older, you’d come off the bench, and he’s doing that while playing better. Maybe they tie his deal to Steph’s. Klay’s value is in the $20-25 million range. I think other teams would sign him. If you’re Detroit, wouldn’t you love that level of maturity and experience? Monty Williams wants a grown-up. If you’re the Magic, don’t you want a grown-up? They need a legitimate shooting guard. Jalen Suggs is a combo guard. I think Gary Harris could be gone this summer. Let the point guard position be a combination of Anthony Black, Suggs, and Cole Anthony. Orlando likes size, which Klay has, and he’d give them shooting.”

Steve Kerr has gone 11-deep in his first quarter rotation. The starters plus Klay, Paul, Payton, Looney, Moody and Trayce Jackson-Davis off the bench. It appears Dario Saric enters tonight as the 12th man and likely out of the current rotation picture. – 10:37 PM

More on this storyline
“I’m all about winning,” Thompson told HoopsHype. “Our franchise has been like that since I’ve been here. Andre Iguodala made the same sacrifice. He came around and got Finals MVP. I’m not saying I’m going to do that this season. I’m still playing 25-30 minutes a night, and especially 13 years in and after the injuries I overcame, it’s still an incredible accomplishment and still being a heck of a player out there. I’m scoring at all three levels, playing defense, and having fun.” -via HoopsHype / March 8, 2024
With that in mind, HoopsHype asked eight NBA executives for their free agent projections for Thompson. Three executives believed Thompson would get $18-20 million annually, and the other five predicted he’d get $20-25 million annually. Four executives believed Golden State would ideally try to align Thompson with his fellow “Splash Brother,” Curry, on a two-year deal. Green, meanwhile, has a player option for the 2026-27 season. “I see him at around $18-20 million a year,” an NBA executive told HoopsHype. “I’m not sure he’ll accept that because he sees himself much higher. If all offers are equal, I think he goes back to Golden State. I feel like his relationship with Steph and being able to play in one place is important to him.” -via HoopsHype / March 8, 2024
“We know we want Klay to be here forever,” Looney told HoopsHype. “He’s a Warrior for life no matter what. Even if he did go somewhere, he’s still going to be a guy that has a statue and jersey in the rafters. We really don’t talk about it. We know how much pressure it is to play in a contract year when there are ups and downs. You feel that heat. I think he’s handled it great, especially with the lineup change. He knows how much he means to this organization, this team, this city, and the Bay Area. Hopefully, he gets to stay forever. That’s one of my goals as well. Hopefully, this core gets to ride it out.” -via HoopsHype / March 8, 2024
