Portnoy claims he declined Trump admin role to stay at Barstool – Football – Sports

Dave Portnoy, the founder of Barstool Sports and an early supporter of Donald Trump‘s presidential bid in 2015, has revealed that he has been enticed with a position in the Commerce Department under Secretary Howard Lutnick.

In a recent video, Portnoy divulged the proposition, explaining that accepting the role would have required someone else to take the helm at Barstool, a stipulation he couldn’t agree to. Portnoy recounted the peculiar offer from the White House, saying: “I got a call, I dunno, a couple of months ago… and it was like, ‘Hey would you have any interest, Dave, in joining the dept of commerce under Lutnick?’

“And btw, even if I wanted to do that, they never followed up. They’re like let us know if you can find somebody to run Barstool and if you are interested, we’ll schedule a call in a week to go over the next steps. But that never happened. It was weird.”

Portnoy also expressed his astonishment at Elon Musk‘s ability to juggle his duties as DOGE Secretary while managing Tesla, Space X, and other projects.

“How do you run Tesla when you’re working on DOGE 24-7?” he asked.

“I guess Elon doesn’t have a specific title, but you kind of want your CEO with your eye on the ball right?”

Portnoy turned Barstool into a powerhouse over two decades before selling it to PENN National Gaming for $550 million and later buying it back for just one dollar.

His often libertarian and occasionally conservative views have drawn attention, possibly leading to an offer from Trump’s team.

In a 2015 blog post, Portnoy made his feelings clear, saying: “I don’t care if he’s a joke. I don’t care if he’s racist. I don’t care if he’s sexist. I don’t care about any of it.

DON’T MISS…

“I hope he stays in the race and I hope he wins. Why? Because I love the fact that he is making other politicians squirm.”
