Rangers to sign UConn goalie Callum Tung

Late last night, Elliotte Friedman noted that the Rangers will be signing UConn goalie Callum Tung to an entry level contract. It’s not official and will likely be announced today, but it does seem like it will be happening. Tung, who just finished his “freshman” season at UConn, is actually turning 22 in November, so he’s not an 18 year old kid making the jump.

Tung eventually wrestled the starting goalie job away from Tyler Muszelik halfway through the season, playing in 16 games and putting up a solid .933 SV% and leading UConn to the second round of the NCAA Men’s Tournament before losing in overtime to Penn St.

Jeff Malcolm will help guide the 21 year old as a pro, hopefully as the next Dylan Garand-esque prospect. Garand is, at this point, trade bait given Igor Shesterkin’s contract.

As an aside, there was some chatter about why Tung would sign with the Rangers, and the answer is very obvious. Look at how the Rangers develop goaltenders. It’s a no-brainer.
