- Rec Room, the social gaming platform, is set to introduce a new UGC suite with Avatar Studio
- You can create and customise your own cosmetics for avatars, and then sell them to other users
- It’s currently in early access, with available applications for creators with an existing portfolio
Social gaming platform Rec Room is set to introduce a new user-generated content platform with the Avatar Studio. This new software will allow players to create their own in-game items for use with their avatars and beyond, it also comes alongside major changes to avatar customisation. So, let’s dig in and find out just how major of a difference the new Avatar Studio might make.
First off, what is it? Avatar Studio is a suite of 3D tools that purportedly lets you design and create your own in-game avatar items with the same software that the main Rec Room team uses. You’ll also be able to submit your creations for approval, and then begin selling them for use by other players. The new Avatar Studio was inspired by the initial addition of Custom Shirts and is currently in early access.
The plan here seems to be not only to offer players a greater way to customise their avatars, but also to encourage the rise of user-generated content and the natural enthusiasm that would hopefully inspire players.
Big or bad?
Of course, it could also be seen as a move to a more Roblox-esque format of UGC, something which I’m sure may not sit well with some players. But at the same time, the release of this toolset does offer more flexibility and customizability for your avatars. Currently, Avatar Studio is only in early access, but you can submit a portfolio of your existing work to be approved for access on the official Rec Room site.
