Per James Mirtle, K’Andre Miller isn’t the only defenseman available this offseason, with the Rangers shopping Carson Soucy as well. Soucy, acquired for the third round pick acquired for Reilly Smith, was pretty terrible with the Rangers last season. Chris Drury wanted a bigger body, but Soucy skated like he was wading through cement. Though on the bright side, he was better at zone entry defense than most of the other Rangers defensemen, but you don’t keep a guy for one specific skill set when everything else is bad.
Aside: Since there were a bunch of comments on this, I need to reiterate that just because I mention something here doesn’t mean I advocate for it. With all the rumors out there, it would be irresponsible for me to omit things that I don’t want/like.
I don’t believe the Rangers will trade both Miller and Soucy unless it’s absolutely necessary–as in, Miller is needed for a huge splash and they want to dump Soucy for a few pucks–so this rumor does track with the Miller rumors. If I had to venture a guess, Soucy gets traded at the draft for a mid-round pick.
This offseason is going to be frustrating because the Rangers don’t really have much of a plan, or at least it’s tough to see the plan. Mike Sullivan brings a lot as coach, but it’s clear something needs to change in the leadership group. Unfortunately, we aren’t seeing many rumors regarding those leaders. Just the RFAs. Patience, young padewans. All will be answered. But be forewarned: You may not like the answers.
