Hayward averaged 15.2 points, 4.4 rebounds and 3.5 assists in 14 seasons, becoming an All-Star in 2017, his last season with the Jazz, the team that drafted him in 2010. After leaving Utah, he played for Boston, Charlotte, and Oklahoma City before retiring from professional basketball.
Here’s how Social Media reacted to the news:
I will never forget how excited I was when Gordon Hayward joined the Celtics. “It’s about to be crazy, G!”, you know. And then the worst possible thing happened in his very first game for Boston. One of the biggest “what-ifs” in modern Celtics history.
Enjoy your retirement, G. https://t.co/PqHIYiRXXv

Thought Gordon Hayward could have helped a playoff team in their rotation this season. He was better than his short stint with the Thunder showed.
But when it’s time, it’s time. His Celtics tenure will always be a fascinating “What if…?”.

For real though, Gordon Hayward might be one of the biggest “What If’s?” in Boston sports history. Entire trajectory of the franchise would have changed if he doesn’t break his foot in that season opener.

Paul George is officially the only player left in the NBA from the 2010 Draft class.
It was him and Gordon Hayward until this morning when Hayward announced his retirement.

Gordon Hayward was cold business until that horrific ankle injury. Godspeed. Great player. Indiana native. Those Butler days had the state on fire. 🫡

What Gordon Hayward did at Butler was crazy…
A fadeaway away from finishing the job. What a time.

From an unranked 3-star prospect to Butler, where he made history leading the Bulldogs to the national championship game, to a top 10 NBA Draft pick, to an All Star nod in 2017 and a 14-year career in The Association. What an amazing journey for Gordon Hayward. https://t.co/iLs24EZ91W
