Social media reacts to Shai Gilgeous-Alexander winning MVP: ‘Canadian made’

The NBA finally announced Shai Gilgeous-Alexander as the 2025 MVP. It was really a two-man race between him and Nikola Jokic, who many can argue has a legitimate case to win his fourth MVP.

This comes on the heels of SGA’s 14 free throws in Game 1 of the Conference Finals where fans (especially Minnesota ones) were complaining about the calls he was getting, furthering the narrative of his moniker as the “Free Throw Merchant”. With how polarizing SGA has become to basketball fans with his unorthodox way of scoring and getting to the line, the reaction is expected to go both ways.

Nevertheless, here are some of the immediate reactions to the news.

Kind of weird to announce the NBA MVP at this time of day, IMO. The Thunder played last night. Could’ve tallied the votes in time to present SGA with the award pregame. Granted, they can do so before Game 2. Still, it seems like something announced on Inside the NBA, not X.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander 🇨🇦 is now: – 1 of 2 Canadians to win MVP – 1 of 2 Canadians to be named to an All-NBA team – 3rd all-time in points by a Canadian in the NBA – only Canadian to lead the league in scoring – only Canadian to average 30+ points over a playoff run

NBA announces co-MVPs for the 2024-25 regular season – Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the league referees. Hell of a player, but gets the most egregiously kind whistle since James Harden’s heyday
