As the 2024-25 NHL regular-season already underway and set to open in North America on Tuesday afternoon, the Edmonton Oilers and Florida Panthers are once again the favorites to hoist the Stanley Cup in June, according to BetMGM.
A season after missing the Stanley Cup Playoffs, the New Jersey Devils are tied for the third-shortest odds in the NHL and second-shortest in the Eastern Conference after adding goaltender Jacob Markstrom, defensemen Brett Pesce and Brenden Dillon, and right-wing Tomas Tatar over the offseason.
Despite losing Pesce, Jake Guentzel, Evgeny Kuznetsov, Teuvo Teravainen, and Brady Skjei and not adding a lot of high-end NHL talent, the Carolina Hurricanes are tied with the Toronto Maple Leafs with the fourth-shortest odds in the East and seventh league-wide.
The New York Islanders and Pittsburgh Penguins enter the regular season with better odds than the Washington Capitals, arguably the most-improved team after adding center Pierre-Luc Dubois, left-wings Andrew Mangiapane and Jakub Vrana, defensemen Jakob Chychrun and Matt Roy, and goaltender Logan Thompson over the offseason. Washington and the Philadelphia Flyers share the same odds to win both the East and Stanley Cup. Meanwhile, none of those other three did much to improve and Philadelphia entering the season with four goaltenders (Sam Ersson, Ivan Fedotov, Cal Petersen, Eetu Makiniemi) that have a combined 131 games of NHL experience. Washington and Philadelphia are among the teams tied for the seventh-longest odds and only the Columbus Blue Jackets and Montreal Canadiens enter the season with worse in the East.
