The Daily Grind: How do you define what counts as a ‘classic’ MMORPG?

Readers know that every year, we give an award for the classic MMO of the year. And every year there’s a fresh debate over where the cutoff for “classic” actually is and what the term actually means.

Personally, I lean on the side of it referring to games that are at least 10 or more years old and preferably older, without excessive popularity or major overhauls that make it competitive with newer MMOs. But I know I’d make exceptions on feel. Project Gorgon feels like a classic MMO but really isn’t. World of Warcraft is 20 years old, but even WoW Classic doesn’t feel like a true classic MMO to me because of how well it’s maintained and updated. I know that makes no sense!

What should the cutoff for “classic” MMO be? How do you define the term?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
