The Magic: The Gathering Pixel Perfect Secret Lair Announcement

The Pixel Perfect Secret Lair was announced via blog post on the Magic: The Gathering website. It is a limited time drop available in both foil (MSRP $49.99) and non-foil (MSRP $39.99). According to the drop’s description, 50% of the drop’s sales will go to the fundraising program Extra Life.

For that price, you’ll get four cards in the Pixel Perfect Secret Lair. The cards in the drop are Mana Geyser, Lightning Bolt, Fierce Guardianship, and Delayed Blast Fireball. Each of these four cards contains pixel art by Mike Burns. That artwork depicts the Fbithp braving a lava-filled dungeon to do battle with the powerful dragon planeswalker Nico Bolas.

The pixel art is packed with small but important details. Background details like Nico Bolas’ symbol. Fbithp having a heart gauge in the upper left corner. Nico Bolas having a large boss health bar. The card descriptions depicted as textboxes by planeswalker Ajani. It all comes together to sell the retro sidescroller aesthetic.

Extra Life was founded in 2008 as a fundraising program of Children’s Miracle Network hospitals led by the gaming community. Since its inception, the program has raised $120 million for critical pediatric needs at local hospitals across the United States and Canada.

Wizards of the Coast has helped donate money to their cause in the past through similar Secret Lair events. Specifically, their proceeds go to support the Seattle Children’s Autism Center.

The Pixel Perfect Secret Lair is available for pre-order right now. The Secret Lair will be available until November 18, 2024.
