Townsfolk is a retro roguelike strategy where you conquer new lands for the Crown

  • Townsfolk is the newest upcoming release from Short Circuit Studios
  • It sees you departing from their twee catalogue in favour of dark, grim roguelike strategy
  • Maintain your populace’s faith, challenge natural obstacles and provide your tithe to the Crown

The folks over at Short Circuit Studios have produced some truly intriguing releases over the years, be that toybox simulators Teeny Tiny Trains, Teeny Tiny Town or Tiny Connections. But now they’re taking a darker, more retro tack with the upcoming release of roguelike strategy city-builder Townsfolk, expected to arrive on April 3rd.

In Townsfolk you play the leader of an expedition sent to colonise new lands by the Crown. Your job? Simply to make sure your people survive, and thrive while expanding the resources of your colony and ensuring that your Food, Gold, Faith and Production are all well within the green.

Of course ,it’s not all sunshine and rainbows in this untamed and uncharted land, and god forbid you forget to pay your tithes to the Crown. You’ll need to deal with wild animals, unpredictable disasters and crucial moral dilemmas to try and keep your colony stable.

Townsfolk is quite the departure for Short Circuit Studios. Previously I’d have put their output firmly into the category of quaint and twee, but it seems that they’re attempting to branch out a bit. Townsfolk has a much darker aesthetic and a seemingly harsher difficulty curve to contend with, and given that it’s sitting in the roguelike sub-genre I’ve no doubt you’ll need to learn to contend with failure.

Townsfolk comes with multiple modes for you to enjoy too, be that the Roguelite Campaign itself, Skirmish Mode to test your mettle in a variety of challenges or Puzzle Challenges to present some truly mind-bending obstacles.
