Trade Rumor: Kings reportedly interested in Delon Wright

Michael Scotto of HoopsHype shared a fresh batch of trade rumors as we officially enter Trade Deadline week. The update included the Kings still being interested in a couple of familiar names, Dorian Finney-Smith and Royce O’Neale, who have been rumored Kings targets for months. But the update also included a note that the Kings are interested in Delon Wright, a name we haven’t seen reported yet.

From Scotto:

Delon Wright has drawn trade interest from the Celtics, Kings, and Timberwolves, league sources told HoopsHype. The Nuggets were also mentioned recently by Marc Stein. Wright is expected to command second-round draft pick compensation in trade talks, league sources told HoopsHype.

Wright was acquired by the Kings at the trade deadline in the 2020-21 season, playing 27 games for the Kings before being traded in the following offseason. Wright was traded for Tristan Thompson, a move that was baffling at the time and has continued to look bad as time went on. I consider it one of Monte McNair’s worst trades, but if that’s your worst trade you’re doing pretty good by Kings GM standards.

Wright would make a lot of sense as a backup guard for the Kings current roster. At 6’5 Wright would give the Kings more size at the guard position, and is a solid-but-not-great shooter. Wright is playing limited minutes for the Wizards this year, but his per-minute numbers are still solid. If the cost is a second rounder and salary matching, I’d be very happy bringing back Wright for a second tour in Sacramento.

The trade deadline is Thursday, February 8th at 12 PM PT.
