Tszyu’s Desperation: Nerves, Weight Woes, And A Career Hanging In The Balance Vs. Spencer

Tim Tszyu believes his opponent, Joey Spencer, is starting to feel the nerves, getting worried ahead of their 10-round fight this Saturday, April 5th, with the event start time at 9:00 PM ET / 6:00 PM PT, live on Prime Video from the Newcastle Entertainment Centre, Broadmeadow, Newcastle.

On a side note: Tszyu looked drawn today to get his weight down. In contrast, Spencer looks like he’s always rehydrated and shows no signs of being drained. That’s not a good sign for Tim.

Career On the Line

Many people believe that it’s WBO junior middleweight champion Tszyu (24-2, 17 KOs) who is worried, knowing that he’s in a must-win situation and cannot afford to lose to the 24-year-old fringe contender Spencer (19-1, 11 KOs). Tszyu has lost his last two fights and was destroyed in three rounds in his last contest against IBF 154-lb champion Bakhram Murtazaliev on October 19th.

Spencer has the power to finish Tszyu off if he can land his shots on him early on. The longer the fight, the more it favors Tszyu because he has the experience and will wear down Joey. Tim has an ego and will continue to fight and cook up excuses if Spencer knocks him out. It doesn’t matter, Tszyu says. His career will be essentially over if he loses.

“We’re both ready to get it on,” said Tim Tszyu to the media, talking about his fight this Saturday against Joey Spencer. “I know exactly what’s going to happen. I know exactly what I’m made of and what exactly I was raised and the ancestry I came from. It’s a lot to look forward to.

“Now is when it counts. It’s not now. It’s now. This is when you’re supposed to be the most relaxed,” said Tszyu when told that Spencer seems nervous now,” said Tszyu.

“I have no problems making weight. I’m ready to go. For me, it’s just getting ready to fight this man. It’s par for the course,” said Spencer. “We’re both getting closer to getting in there and taking each other out. It’s a mental shift that takes place with a lot of fighters when it gets close.”
