Vincent Iorio, Ilya Protas Among More Players Cut From Washington Capitals’ Training Camp

The Washington Capitals cut 20 more players, including the five players reported on Saturday who were being placed on waivers, on Sunday after taking Saturday off.

In addition to the players placed on waivers, left-wing Ilya Protas, the 78th overall pick in June by Washington, being reassigned to the OHL’s Windsor Spitfires and defensemen Vincent Iorio, the 55th overall (and the Capitals’ first) selection in the 2021 NHL Draft, getting loaned to the AHL’s Hershey Bears were among the most notable names to be cut on Sunday.

The updated training camp roster, which is down to 29 disregarding center Nicklas Backstrom and right-wing T.J. Oshie (who will both be placed on long-term injured reserve at the start of the season), can be found here.

The Capitals have two exhibition games remaining (at Columbus Blue Jackets on Monday, vs. Boston Bruins on Saturday, October 5).

Their final 23-man roster is due at 5 PM ET on Monday, October 7. Washington will open the regular season on Saturday, October 12 vs. the New Jersey Devils.
