The Capitals. currently have $6,368,333 in NHL salary cap space with Nicklas Backstrom (hip) expected to remain on long-term injured reserve next season.

The team now has 10 forwards, seven defensemen, and one goaltender under contract for the 2024-25 campaign with center Connor McMichael (not salary arbitration eligible) set to become a restricted free agent on Monday. The team expressed desire to shake up their defensive group entering the weekend.

Washington acquired center Pierre-Luc Dubois from the Los Angeles Kings for goaltender Darcy Kuemper on June 19 before they got right-wing Andrew Mangiapane from the Calgary Flames for the Colorado Avalanche’s 2025 second-round pick on Thursday.

Washington selected left-wing Ilya Protas, center Aliaksei’s brother, at 75th overall with their other 2024 third-round pick.
