Washington Capitals Down New Jersey Devils, 5-3; Logan Thompson Shines; Dylan Strome, Brandon Duhaime Each Score Twice

The Washington Capitals defeated the New Jersey Devils by a score of 5-3 at Prudential Center in Newark on Wednesday night to improve to 1-2-0 in the 2024 preseason. Goaltender Logan Thompson played the full game, making 25 saves in his debut with the team after the Capitals acquired the 27-year-old from the Vegas Golden Knights on June 29.

Washington has three exhibition games remaining before opening the regular season on October 12 vs. New Jersey.

  • 18:33, 2-1 Washington: Strome ripped another wrister under the blocker of Markstrom on a breakaway after getting a stretch feed from Van Riemsdyk in the defensive zone.
  • 19:00, 3-1: Duhaime tapped one past Markstrom’s pad inside the left post after Raddysh crunched Dillon into the corner and Dowd retrieved the puck and fed Duhaime from the goal-line.

  • 15:00, 4-2: Dillon’s wrister from up top went through a maze of traffic surrounding Thompson and got tipped by Hischer, who fed Dillon with a pass from the half-wall.
  • 17:03, 4-3: With the goalie pulled, Casey fed Hughes at the top and Hughes floated a wrister, which beat Thompson to the blocker, through another screen of bodies.
  • 19:20, 5-3 (ENG): Duhaime finished a tic-tac-toe passing play with Dowd and Raddysh in front.
